I can't remember now if the double part was to 10 or to 20. Sorry. Casey was about 25 lbs so whatever the normal dosage would be is where we started.
As I said, he was a total mess emotionally when we got him. We never took him off the meds. He went to the bridge a year ago last June. He was a completely different dog after we doubled the dosage. He went from terrified of everything to very close to normal!!!
I was dumping old meds yesterday and came across Casey's prescription. It was indeed 10 mg so he did get 20 mg. He was the worse case of fearful I have ever seen.
The doubling of the dosage made all the difference in the world to him.
He went from pacing and panting all the time to being able to lay down and rest like a normal dog.
Casey crossed the bridge a year and a half ago. He was a very damaged dog when we adopted him at 10 yrs old. Terrified. Of everything. We had him for about 3 1/2 years. It took about 2 years for him to start to get comfortable with the world.
The fluoxetine made a huge difference in his life the last year or so. He was finally becoming a happy dog. But we lost him at 13 1/2.
He never, ever had a problem with another dog or cat however.
I don't really have any answers, but had to respond. My doctor's have always said I'm super sensitive to drugs and I never think so. But considering I was on 10mg of fluoxetine for depression, jeez, I must be if that's what we're giving small dogs. Haha.
I like the idea of retraining with the harness/collar. Also, when you put it on, be sure to give treats. I know my dog always acts like I'm going to beat him when I put his harness on, no clue why either. I recently found out he HATES being collared. I honestly didn't think a dog would care. So maybe a collar or even a different type of harness may work?
good luck. I'm glad to hear the meds are working though.
