For folks who use Wellness

Indy at a year old was only 15 lbs and the vet snarled at me "this dog is TOO THIN!" and proceeded with the checkup as if I was an axe murderer. When he came back in with the results of the tests he watched Indy for a few minutes. Indy was doing his usual thing....trotting to running circles around everything. The vet asked "does he do this a lot" and I said "right up to 11 pm when we put him in his crate for the night." The vet said "this is a healthy dog, he's just too thin but its because he's active. Put him back on puppy food." Indy stayed on puppy food until about 2 to 2.5 years old because it took that long for him to get to his 23 - 25 lbs range.

I think you just have to look at their body development to decide when to make the switch. I went "by the book" with Indy and had to go back to puppy food because Indy just ran everything off. Other dogs fill out their bones and muscles just fine and are ready to go to adult food.
 
I switched my two shelties over by one year on Wellness 5 Mix. My two love Wellness and do great, they are on the regular size. I never seen any other size around here either.

Okay, so I'm glad that he is being fed appropriately. He did grow so fast! At 6 months my mom thought he was fat, but his hair was so fluffy and when I bathed him - he just looked like the right healthy size. :lol:
I have a Golden Ret. 11 yrs. old who is still being fed Nutro Large Breed Senior. I want to switch him to wellness too, but I think it would be super expensive. My Golden is not doing well - blind, loss of muscle tone, and lays down a lot. Does anyone know if Nutro is a bad food? I think their cans were recalled a few years back. Lamb used to be the #1 ingredient, then mysteriously it changed to chicken! What the heck???? :no:

I think it is better to keep a Sheltie on the lean side, otherwise, they will suffer badly on their legs when they are older.

My wife says I am obsessive about the weight of our dogs. However, it is much harder to get the weight off when they are older. People used to say my Mac was all skin and bone, I think he was just about right, 20 inches high and 32 lbs. You should have seen him run, poetry in motion, there wasn't many dogs that could get anywhere near him. If they did, he did that Sheltie thing when he would turn 360 in the blink of an eye. The other dog would wonder where he had gone :biggrin2:
