For those of you that use seatbelts/harnesses...

Well, our first trip with the new harness went well. I strapped Gus in the middle rear seat and managed to figure out how to connect the crazy seat belt hanging down from the headliner. We got to the vet's and I couldn't get him out! After struggling for 10 minutes with the door open during the blizzard-- the two of us knotted up in the back seat-- I finally read the 6-point instructions on the seatbelt: you need to insert a key into the seat belt latch to release. WHAT???

Like anyone would have the presence of mind to insert a key if you were trapped in an accident.

Needless to say, on the ride home I buckled him into one of the rear side seats--no problem. But then I was paranoid that we'd be t-boned and he would killed by the impact of a side airbag inflating. :rolleyes2:

By the time we got home, I had ten more gray hairs. :lol:

Those darn airbags. If they all go off it would be like a mini explosion.:eek2: My sons roll their eyes at my dog seat and harness.

You can barely see her black harness with the red writing for all the dog hair. She also wears a very fu-fu crystal encrusted collar that is only seen when it's removed.:rolleyes2:
 
Teresa, she's beautiful! I'm glad this thread did encourage others to get seatbelts/restraints for their dogs. Sometimes it's one of those things that pet owners had never really thought about until someone brings it up to them. I know I was read the riot act years ago by a fellow Paramedic's wife and Sheltie owner when she found out that I didn't use restraints. It then seemed so obvious that I went out and bought them right away and have used them ever since.
 
We think she is sweet. Last night she was standing on hubby, while he was in the recliner, helping him with his popcorn bag. I thought she was just going to stick her nose down the bag and help herself.:biggrin2:

She doesn't really like her harness. But she is a pacer when riding. So she doesn't get a choice. There are three straps that hold the seat in place. They go around the back of the seat. So her seat wouldn't work if you can't access the back of the seat. It would also only work for a small sheltie.

I have the sm/med for Bailey. It was much bigger than I expected. I got it for her when she was 4 months old and it was too big for her. I had to use a hair tie to make it smaller. Now she is 13 inches and about 13 pounds and it is still a little big for her. So, I would go with the xsmall for Jasper. I don't know how small that size is or how big Jasper will get, so he may grow up of it.

I went to go order that harness & belt combo..and from $8.99 the price jumped to $24.99.They charge a service charge.So between service charge & shipping it brought the price up.I think i'll wait and see what our pet shops in Florance carries,and also there is another place in Rockingham.

I did find a seatbelt thingie in Foster & Smith,pretty much like what Trapp is using now.

I'll come across something in my travels I'm sure.

whoa. yea if your order is under $50, they charge a service a fee. When I order from petedge, I always order a bunch of things at once, so I don't have to pay the fee and shipping is cheaper.

I did'nt realize it. I'm sure sometime down the road,if I have not found something,I will go ahead with the order. Brian said lets see what we can find locally.

Is the harness something Jasper can wear even without being in the car? He already has a harness I got,it's a really nice one,quite heavy duty,the same brand that Earnhardt has worn for years. Trapp has one to.

I believe it is Hamilton brand. I wished now when Walmart had discontinued this seat belt apparatus,I wish now I had bought 2. They were only $3.00 on clearance.Regularly $19.99
 
I found this while looking at car stuff for dogs -Wanna go for a ride?

The videos scare me. :no: I really like the german one in the last video - it looks so secure!!! There are some links at the bottom of impact tested car restraints for dogs. But note the comments on who does the testing - manufacturer (won't say their product sucks would they?) or independent body.
