Gallbladder Mucoceles

Thanks so much for posting this, Brad! We live in tick central here in Connecticut and all my show dogs are on Advantix. I'm sending the paper to my vet and I'll be switching too.
 
I saw this come across my FB feed over the weekend. Thanks for sharing it. I wasn't able to do so from my cell phone. This is a topic of particular interest to me since Edan had his gallbladder removed back in 2011 for GBM.

One other point this study makes is around hypothyroid also contributing to GBM. Edan was actually diagnosed with hypothyroid in March 2011 and had his gallbladder removed for GBM in July 2011. What I remember most about Edan's pre-diagnosis was the nearly two weeks of not eating and it being VERY difficult to diagnose. I read the published info too. I was using Advantix and switched off in July to natural since it has been so dry in California that all the fleas dried up and blew away. I can definitely see Advantix is a problem. However, I also have a lot of questions on their leveling factors. Did they make any distinction on fat content in food? Was it high fat content + Advantix, Advantix + even low fat content, etc.? I have also dumped the 18% fat stuff for the shelties and gone to a Fromm food that is 12%. I really would like to know more about this study with factors of age, gender, activity, lineage links, and food. However, I am donated my "backup" Advantix to a shelter. Cubby really itched excessively in the area it was applied. I will have some good old Frontline on hand for an emergency but natural whenever I can.
 
Oh jeez. This is why I need to be on the board more often. I changed Koji to Advantage/Advantix 3 years ago because SoCal fleas became immune to Frontline. Guess it's time to do some research or see if the fleas in OR are also immune.
 
You know, I finally found the whole study and read up. They did a fairly good job with variables. However, the correlation is strong. It turned out 9.3 times more prevalent of mucocele with Advantage/Advantix/Saresto. Tim (Woodbender) has had wonderful results with Flea Free. He is taking Claire to a heavily flea property where the humans are getting ticks but not Claire. My dogs are on it too and have been for a year. I have had no fleas, but I have no idea if we haven't encountered any or we are immune. I do have on hand some Frontline for if we do something just too flea-like (like camping in the mountains) but with the exception of Melli having 5 vet visits including one where a dog with severe flea allergy walked past her we haven't been out during this lovely CA fire season.
