Getting a new puppy!

I would post pictures but don't know how to. Gus has been home for a week now and is fairly good about go outside to go to the bathroom, even in the storm. He loves to pee in the snow, it must be a guy thing. This puppy can eat. He eats all his food and goes into the pantry to see if he can find more. He chases the cat all over the house and I am afraid that he wants to eat her. Sadie and Gus has reached an understanding and doing well together. She has been a great help. As the weather improves, we are hoping he can play more outside. The neighbor children came over this weekend and nothing tires a puppy better then children. Sadie enjoyed it too. We decided that Gus is a keeper but really hope that the cat makes it.

Gus is ringing the bell on the door regularly now and is having fewer mistakes. His older sister is a real help. Gus also got his ears taped up today. It took my wife to hold him while a friend taped his ears. Today was a fairly warm day and Gus got to run outside in the back yard. Man, can that dog run! We have been giving him carrots to teeth on and he will eat the whole carrot so he has orange poop. We have had friends come in to welcome him into the neighborhood and at first he holds back. But if the people hold back, he comes up to them and allows to be petted. So after almost two weeks of having Gus, we think we will keep him. On Saturday, he will be 10 weeks old.

Gus is 12 weeks old tomorrow and will be getting his second set of shots today. He is doing great with his house breaking but still has an accident once in a while. We have begun lead training, sits and comes. Last week he learned to go up the stairs and three days later, he learned to go down, however, much slower. His constant biting is becoming more of an issue. Carrots and wash towels have helped but we have started to correct him too. Holding him by the back of the neck (forceful but gentle) and holding him while telling no really helps. We forgot the effort it takes to raise a puppy but it is worth every minute.

Yup, raising a little pup is a lot of work, but the time and effort you are putting in now will pay off big time as he matures. You are smart to step on the nipping immediately and it sounds like Gus is responding. You could also try giving a sharp cry anytime his teeth hit your skin and stop whatever game or attention he is getting for a minute so he learns that teeth nipping human skin cause you upset/hurt and also end fun time momentarily. Bet Gus is a cute little tyke!!

Well Gus is 15 weeks old tomorrow. We measured him at the withers and he was 11 1/2 inches tall. We believe he should be well under the 16 inches standard. He gets his final shots next Monday and begins classes next Tuesday. He is walking on a lead fairly well already. We are hoping to walk him in an Easter parade on March 19th. We had guests over the past weekend that included two children and he had a blast. He is shy at the beginning but doesn't take long to warm up which is good. Gus's sister had two cysts removed from her front paw which is #3 and 4 that were removed (#1 and 2 were from her other front paw). She has been slower to recover from this operation but is much better today. This week, she returned to the nursing home and to the elementary school for her Therapy work.
