Getting my puppy to eat her dog food

I'm on the 15 minute schedule with Bacca now too.

And PitterPatter, I just picked up some Wing a Lings tonight. Haven't tried it yet but I'm hoping its better than the garbage wet food that I was forced to buy in a hurry when Bacca stopped eating again. I now have 4 cans of this junk and might drop it off at the SPCA.

Barb your suppose to shake the can because it's very soupy. This is suppose to redistribute the goodies in the sauce. I put mine in a plastic container because it takes a week to get through a can. It's also very rich so start with half a teaspoon of goodies, a little of the soup, and then some water. Lacey loves when I give her a piece of the bone. I break everything into small pieces so she doesn't just wolf it down. Hope your pups love the food.

Somehow I missed that the food had bones in it! I opened the can this morning and did notice how soupy it was, but was in a hurry, so just dumped a tbsp in each bowl of what was mostly sitting on the top.

My son fed the dogs their supper when he came home, and noticed that Bacca was choking. He reached in and pulled out a large bone!

That being said, he still scarfed both his meals this morning. He apparently loves this stuff! I'm going to take a closer look at it later./

That's why it's called wing a lings. There are whole chicken wings in the can. And it is very soupy. That's why you need to shake when you use the first can. Kind of redistributes the goodies.

Since mine acts like it's the last meal I just take my spoon and cut all the pieces into manageable bites. Sorry to hear Bacca was choking. Obviously he was wolfing it down. Hopefully, he didn't get fed too much. It is very rich.

When it's refrigerated it jells. So I use the hot water tap to instantly heat and dissolve. It is soupy, but that is what mine seems to love. The way it adds flavor to her dry kibble.

I'm an idiot! I have to admit that my guys love the taste! Bacca is eating his food again with some enthusiasm! I'm uncomfortable with the "bone thing" though. I think I will stick with Merricks but try a non bone formula.

The soupy is what I loved about it! I only need to 2-3 tsp and he laps it up! It mixes well with his kibble without making it mushy (yes, Indy now gets some too! It seemed wrong that Bacca got the good stuf, because he's the picky one!)

If they like the chicken flavor then go with Grammy's pot pie. Supposed to be a doggy favorite. I picked the other because I want her to get the vitamins and minerals from the marrow in the bones. They also sell variety packs, but I haven't seen them at the only store that sells that brand in this area.

:biggrin2: So I will quit hijacking this thread. :biggrin2:

I seem to be having this problem with Bailey (6.5 mons).

She is eating California Natural Lamb & Rice. The recommended food for her age and weight is 1 1/4 cups a day. I've been feeding her 1/2 cup twice a day, but she only eats 1/2 of that.

Is half a cup of kibble a day enough? I feel like I'm starving her.

She had been on canned food for long time because of her sensitive stomach. She always ate all the canned food.

I do recall her doing this when I feed her wellness and innova. She would eat a lot less than the suggested feeding. I used to mix in canned food to get her to eat more....but then she started having stomach problems.

Because of her sensitive stomach, I don't want to start testing around with different canned foods. I happy that I finally found puppy kibble that doesn't give her loose stool.

Should I mix in her prescription canned food? I also don't want to entice her to eat more than she can handle. This will cause her to overeat and give her loose stool.

I always mix in a bit of canned for mine, just a tablespoon or so, and some warm water. It really does make a difference, and if you have a canned food that you know agrees with her I would do that. I do think that our dogs generally eat what they need (except that some of mine would eat till they explode!) so I wouldn't be too worried, especially if she's getting a cup a day and she's over six months.

You could also try mixing in a bit of chicken broth, which shouldn't upset her digestion. But that does have a lot of salt in it. I usually dissolve a boillion cube which isn't as bad.

I can't say for sure...but I can tell you that we feed Bentley about 1/2 C a day. He's 2 and weighs 18 lbs. I know that Bailey is a bit younger, but from what I remember she's pretty small so she may not need a lot of food. You may want to check with your vet.

Consider the Merricks (I use Thanksgiving Day Dinner)....its very soupy, so a little goes a long way, so does not upset the food balance too much. It coats the kibble nicely without softening it too much - just enhances the taste - with added gems of sweet potatoe and turkey chunks. The boys love it.
