Getting used to cat

Some good news, yesterday night I took Christy outside to pee, and I didn't know that our cat was in the kitchen on a rug. It was dark, and I didn't see the cat. I was calling Christy, and she was distracted a little, then she came. I looked closer, and realized the cat was there. Thankfully the cat didn't run away and stood her ground. So even though the cat was in Christy's presence, Christy was able to walk away and go outside. Then as we walked back in, Christy paid very little attention to the cat.:smile2: So there is progress. Also today I let the cat walk around while I had the dog on a leash with a bully stick. Thankfully she chose the bully stick over the cat, but.....when the cat decided to run away, Christy pulled on the leash wanting to chase the cat . I hope the cat also learns not to run as this is what starts the chase.

That's good news. I think some shelties are really hard to train out the chase instinct, so it is better if the cat learns to stand it's ground. Tully plays with the cats (she prefers cats to dogs - they are the few things smaller than her) and is very gentle with them. But if the cats chase each other around the house she just cannot control herself and tries to chase after them. No amount of training has ever stopped it. Instead, when the cats want to play with each other I try to keep the dogs away, and the cats also have areas they can chase each other up high to get away from the dogs.
