There is no cure for Giardia, its simply a process of getting it to go dormant with in the dog so they dont have symptoms. Once they have it, the cysts burrow themselves into the lining of the digestive tract and capulsate themselves when they burst and enter the digestive track is when you see the Giardia symptoms ie the slimy diarrhea. It is typically seen within young puppies because their immune system is not strong enough to fight it off. I actually had a puppy with a case of Giardia so severe they were not sure if she would make it...We tried panacur with flagyl for months...nothing worked the only thing that ended up working was the drontal. It made her sicker than sick but within 2 weeks she was coming up negative for the cysts in her poo. My vet believes that Giardia like any other organism out there is becoming drug resistant to the old standby of panacur and its simply not touching it..
And most cases almost every dog now a days has Giardia its just the case of who has a stronger immune system to fight it off.
My Vet also does not use the Giardia vaccine, he doest see where it really works.

How can I prevent it? I'm good about picking up poo in the back (what I can) and pouring boiling water over the rest to kill whatever is left over. However, I don't know what to do about their water. I read that it's also in contaminated drinking water, but they share water. If I try to separate the two from the water. Pogo thinks I'm scolding him and then he won't drink at all. Does it help that Pogo isn't a poo eater?
