I have one of their leather leashes...awesome quality leather. I think that their leash/martingale combo would be great for walks/showing.

Riley wears a rolled leather collar all day with his tags. I leave it looser than it probably should be so that it does not crush his fur. When we go out I slip on his martingale collar I got from petsmart/petco, so he actually wears two collars when we are outside. He can't get out of the martingale on walks and he still has a collar on in case he gets away.

Their products look really nice, but I hate spending that kind of money on something that no one will ever see.

I found some much cheaper martingale collars that would do the trick. I'd be more inclined to buy my three some really nice rolled leather collars to wear all the time, then these cheaper martingales to slip on and off for walks.

I found this site last night while looking around as well! Beautiful products! I actually already emailed him with details of what I would like to see if he could customize a collar for me. I've also emailed Leashes By Design as well. I wish my dogs were older as my oldest is only 6 months and I don't want an adjustable collar-I don't want them feeling a slide or buckle against their necks. But I know Claussen is going to grow bigger than the 11" neck he's got now.
 
Whether or not you have an issue with kangaroo collars, I think whatever you decide you need to take design into consideration.

I personally believe that for Shelties, the lighter and looser the collar, the better. That's part of why I like martingales and specifically Leashes by Design.

I leave my dogs collars on all the time, but they are so narrow and because they are martingales, the collars just bury half way into their ruffs. It's loose, so it does not create chafing or snarls - yet when tightened on a leash, I've I have control of the dog.

I prefer a rolled collar for that reason...theirs is only 1/4 inch and I can't even see it when they wear it.

I had martingale made out of 1/2" weave and hated it. It matted the fur constantly.

I only wish that I could find a new supplier since Shannon is downscaling her business.

Yes, I emailed Shannon yesterday and she said she no longer makes rolled collars. She said

"The kangaroo martingales are a much nicer product, however, they do not have snaps on them. The only thing that I could possibly do is put a small snap on one end of the leather portion and you could snap it to the other floating o-ring on the martingale chain. The kangaroo leather allows you to have a much lighter product, without sacrificing strength. Most of my Sheltie customers prefer a 6 strand, but it is more personal preference. A 4 strand is strong enough, but it is approx. 1/8" wide. An 8 strand is about 1/4" in diameter, while a 6 strand is a little less than 1/4", depending on the cut of the lace. I've also never heard any complaints about kangaroo breaking coat like some other collars."

Now, I guess I just need to decide what width to go with. 1/8" seems too narrow. Do you have the 8 strand or 6 strand Barb?

I have the 6 strand and it is plenty thick. I would not go wider. Just be real careful with the measuring. I got mine when both my boys were about 12 months old. If anything, their necks got narrower as they got older and now both martingales are a little too large. I've been talking to Shannon to figure out out what to do. I was hoping that i could just remove a few links from the chain. She doesn't think so.

I still swear by this product, don't get me wrong. But you really have to wait for your pup to be really full grown.

Good lord! They want danger money for their collars. I've never seen one like this before, but they look like they'd work very well.

I've got a leather leash I had made at a horse tack shop years and years ago that has outlasted six dogs - quality costs more, but it's well worth it.
