Hi, my name is Amanda and I'm a sheltie lover.

My first dog was a sheltie...back in 1997, Shelby, a beautiful little Tri; sadly she passed away back in 2008 from heart failure, probably secondary to lyme's disease.

I just got my new 'baby' about a month ago. Her name is Belle and she's almost 6 yrs old.

She's a blue merle w/ icey blue eyes and such a sweetheart. I got her from a 'breeder' who got her from another 'breeder' friend - she'd been bounced around from a few different breeders and i think she was confined alot and didn't get alot of loving. She'd just had puppies back in November, and apparently it didn't go well, so that's why the lady was looking for a new home since she wasn't getting any more puppies out of her. I think she treated her well, better than anyone else who'd had her; she had a big horse farm & Belle had free run.

She's very timid, but coming out of her shell after a month. We took her to the vet for a thorough exam and labs, and found out she has lyme's (i almost cried) and had a uterine infection from the whelping back in Nov... no wonder she was mopey AND had such a hard time w/ her whelping if she had Lyme's; uggh.

So, long story short, she's been on antibiotics for almost a month now b/c the titre was pretty high (almost 400), and she was spayed almost 2 weeks ago, PLUS had her dew claws removed (poor thing, nobody every bothered to remove them when she was a puppy!)

She's doing great, such a lover. She's perked up so much it is amazing. The only thing I"m having trouble with is the poor thing doesn't know how to play and she doesn't do well with steps. Luckily i have a ranch and only have about 5 steps that she's gotten used to, but my parents have a bi-level and they have 2 sets of about 8 steps to get in and out of the house. They were supposed to be puppy sitting for me the first week of march, but now, i'm not sure since she won't do the steps. Any tips on getting her to conquer the steps?

She loves being off the leash in the yard and runs around and frollicks, but she doesn't know how to play with toys, play fetch, etc. I'm sure w/ time maybe she'll come around. I saw another gal who posted that her puppy mill momma had the same prob and she was coming around.

Anyway, great forum, i'm looking forward to catching up on some posts!

take care! Amanda :biggrin2:

Hi Amanda! Welcome to the Sheltie Nation Forum! I am just a hop skip and jump from you in Hunterdon County. Your blue merle is beautiful. We have two sable and whites and a blue merle as well. Thanks for posting the video!

hiya and welcome.
she is a beauty ! i also have a blue merle girl, well, girls Kayla is pure and Tessa is .5 sheltie. Sugar is a eskie and Suzi is sable and white.
about playing with toys, Suzi never has. no interest what so ever in them. the other girls have tried to get her to play with toys. Suzi plays with the others, chase and frolick. but not toys

Hi Amanda

Welcome to you and Belle. What a beauty!

Thanks for posting the video, Belle reminds me of my puppy mill boy, Tobey. He had the same type of behavior in the beginning, giving paw and being a little way too submissive with crouching behavior. Notice I said 'had' the same type of behavior because after a couple of weeks he began to BLOSSOM.

Tobey was also unsure of himself on the stairs, but with baby steps he managed nicely, one day bounding all the way up them without any coaxing at all.

Good luck, keep us posted

Thanks for the warm welcome! Sorry, I forgot to subscribe to the thread!

Kate (famous seamus) I was perplexed how you knew that my girl was uber submissive and always head down and giving paw... then i realized the video. lol. But yes, that's how she is.... she's does it much less now. I didn't realize that was characteristic of a puppy mill type dog; but I suspected her original owner (not the gal i got her from) kept her confined.

She also gives paw when she needs to go out; it's so funny; took me a day or 2 to get it. She'll come up and just start pawing at my leg (more of a poking kind of paw than a greeting paw); she's a smart girl. Also, the other weird tell she has to go to potty is she gets all excited like she would if you just came home after a long vacation and your dog was turning himself inside out because he was so happy. That was her original tell until i got it about the paw... I guess when you're a confined dog, you had to do whatever you could to get someone's attention.

I've had her a month and 1 week today! And I'm happy to say today is her last dose of Doxycycline for the lymes.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will knock it out of her completely. My first sheltie had lymes and she was chronic, developed kidney probs and ultimately heart failure and died at 11... i was do devastated. It's taken me 3 years to be ready for a new dog, and I found the perfect little angel.

With time and love she'll be even better than she already is!

@ Danisgoat - Cool; nice to know I've got a neighbor. I live in phillipsburg and work in Bridgewater, so not far at all!

Nice to meet you all. Loving the forums. Looking to spend more time soon when I'm back from my business cruise! Sun, fun and then 3 days in NOLA.
