I don't use all of the standard brushes, I have a furminator, but this is what I do:
First I spritz the fur, this moistens the hair so that you don't damage it while brushing.
I start at the base of the tail, I part the fur and start combing out the undercoat in short, gentle strokes. I try to be very careful not to pull. I do this over most of her body, spritzing whenever the fur starts drying. I don't bother to part the fur on her ruff, I just brush it normally. I don't brush her belly too much because there isn't alot of fur there. When I do I'm VERY gentle and use slow strokes.
I check for matts around her ears probably every other day and also use the furminator to comb them out. Baby powder is good to soak up excess oil and also prevents matts apparently. I ALWAYS forget to try this but one of these days I'll remember! I love baby powder.
On her feathers I use a regular comb.
When I'm just about finished I use a slicker brush on her tail and to smooth out her coat. I also use it to fluff up her ruff and the fur around her ears
