Grooming the Easy Way

Fergus is now 16 weeks and up to now the grooming hasn't been going well. Trying to introduce him to the brush and comb, but he was having none of it. He won't stand still for a second and he just wants to chew the brush.

However, not one to be defeated, I had a brainwave this morning and gave him a beef hide chew, the first time he has ever had one. Well, he would have let me do anything to him. He was so engrossed in his new chew, I gave him a good brush and I don't think he even noticed. :biggrin2:

Guess what he'll be getting next groom time?

First of all, your sheltie is really cute. Oh believe me he'll get used to that brushing, and congrats to you for thinking of a way to distract him. We have to get creative sometimes with these furkids.

Great idea! Pairing something that they think is "negative" with something very positive is a good thing to do!! Putting them up on a high table works too...I did that with Caliber because he was the same way...and he stayed quite still for me! that works great particularly for clipping nails and gluing ears....where as now, anytime I clip his feet or nails he falls asleep on the floor!!! LOL And when I glue his ears...well, sometimes I still have to put him up on the table...:rolleyes2: he's such a big suck!

Ok, I'm going to semi-derail this thread. I have seen you girls from Canada refer to your dogs as big sucks a couple of times now and I'm wondering what exactly do you mean? Big baby? Just curious. I guess I wanted to make sure I understood your lingo without assuming! :biggrin2:

Yes, suck means baby! That's the NICE version.

It also is used in the context of "sucking up" - which sorta means getting what you want through manipulation (e.g. flattery, good behaviour, ingratiating onself). :razz::wink2:

In the case of Shelties, I guess it can be both! :wink2:
