I put my dogs out this morning, play around on my phone, then go out to get them. My wonderful, beautiful, sweet heart dog comes around the corner with a wet, disgusting, post-rigor, half a squirrel that he has obviously been enjoying. Yay for "leave it" commands, even if it did take me a few to convince him I meant it.

:ick :ick :ick :ick :ick

As someone who's actually eaten squirrel, it's not that bad, although they don't really have much meat on them. ;)

I would be concerned, however with the health of the squirrel and if it was freshly killed or the leftovers of a fox, owl or some other predator. Did he actually eat any of it, or was it just a disgusting plaything?

He was chowing down. Not a fresh kill, it was wiggly. I have no idea if it was intact when he found it. I'm headed home in a few minutes to check on him.

When I was younger I lived in a very rural area of Upstate Ny. We had tons of acerage, so my foster parents use to just let our three dogs run till their hearts content. They would come home around dinner time and Meeka our pure bred beagle would never, ever disappoint us. Dead possum, beaver, squirrel, deposited right on the floor in the kitchen by the dinner table.
