Gypsy's first allergy shot

Yesterday we took Gypsy in for her first allergy shot. The vet tech had my BF and myself learn how to give the shots. First she had him give her a saline shot for practice and I gave her the shot with the serum. She was so good. I was so proud of her. We have been instructed to always watch her for an hour afterwards for any side effects. Currently we will do every other day increasing the strenth of the serum as we go along until we get 2 the desired strength in the third month.

She had no side effects yesterday so we are keeping our paws crossed all will go well and we can get this under control.

Note- I am hoping the BF will be the one to come over and administer the shots since he is a dentist and more comfortable with this. Most of all though I don't want her hating me.:uhoh:

I am glad to hear that Gypsy did not have any reactions to the shot. If the serum isn't very thick, the needle will probably be really small and she will hardly feel it. I have given my goats countless numbers of needles, and you will get used to it, if you have to do it. I am sure she will forgive you.

That's good news, Dawn! I hope she continues to handle the shots well. I hear you on giving them...not my favorite thing to do either. Hope the BF can do the dirty deed for you!

Good news Dawn,,,giving the shots is pretty easy. I had to give them to Katie and Mark used to help, then once I tried it while she was eating. She and I did fine with doing that way. How is she doing now?

Shot, cookie, cookie, cookie.

That's what we did with our kidney dog who got fluids. She would actually leap up, turn 180 degrees, and lay there for her shots, because she knew she got THREE cookies, and the other dogs got NONE!! muahahahaha...

Trevor was on allergy shots a good part of his life. I was unsure of myself at first too, but the shots are easy to give & you will be a pro in no time!

One tip I was given was to warm the serum in your hand before injecting. (once drawn into the syringe). Some dogs find the refrigerated liquid uncomfortable.

Trevor used to come running & get excited when he would see his allergy needle come out! :eek2: He knew cookies were coming right after the indignity. He was such a good patient.

She is continuing to do well,we do give her treats right after so she is happy about that.

Thanks Kelly we have been doing that,I learned that when I had to give myself shots of interferon for Hep C. I was told it takes the sting away.
