Hand shy

This weekend, after Justice was done showing,we hung out talking to everyone. This one lady he never met before was talking to us(sitting in a chair) and Justice swung his bum around and sat down right between her feet and looked over his shoulder at her like "you can pet me now." She said "not too subtle is he". Uh Nope. :biggrin2:

OMG - that is just what Deska does 'Doesn't everyone love me and want to pat my rump'

However, I did tell a few people yesterday "she really likes to be petted on her white collar" and that seemed to work well. I think that if they start on her collar and work their way up Buffy will be fine. It's not like she snaps when someone tries to pet her head.

I am really excited about this dog therapy stuff! I hope it works out. Buffy is the youngest one in the class, only 8 months. The other dogs were all about 2 years old. She was very distracted since it was a new place and there were DOGS around. I think she will be better next week, though. She was already starting to improve at the end of class.

Do any of you do dog therapy? Any tips?

Two comments:

1) Great idea about starting on the ruff and working up! Reading your post, I realized thats exactly what I do with Bacca. He's totally fine with having his head touched if you work up to it

2) Funny how different jurisdictions have different rules. I recently inquired about it for my dogs, but was informed that they won't take in any dogs until they are at least 3 years old!

It seems when I go to pet my Snickers head he shys away like i am going to hit him or that I am going to punish him.. (at least thats the look he gives me.. and i would never ever hit him so I shouldnt get that look lol) but if I kneel on the ground or just sit in a chair he comes a runnin to me.

While I was walking Bailey this morning, a teenage boy approached us. He asked me what time it was. Bailey was wagging her tail and sniffing his pants. He asked me if she was friendly and I said yes. He bent down and went straight for her head. She backed off and her tail went between her legs. I told him to let her sniff him first, but she wouldn't go anywhere near him. He even tried to give her a treat, but she wanted nothing to do with him. :(

She was like....."ooh, you are a fellow teenager. I know what that is all about. Stay away from me."
