I use a martingale collar now and my Sheltie has managed to slip out of it twice when he shoots out the front door and goes after a raccoon - usually at night. He might also be trying to chase something and choke himself while I am trying to stop him from pulling forward in the collar. That breaks my heart when he does that. :no:

So I was considering trying a harness for walking him to avoid this. I don't know what type to try or if this would even be appropriate for a Sheltie. Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks! :smile2:

We use harness' for both of our shelties.They are made by Hamilton.Also another good brand is Premier,if you are looking for just a harness to put on them prior to walking etc.

But since we have purchased seat belt restraints for both of the pups,we actually use that harness for walking also,as it is a double duty harness.If you don't plan on taking your pup in the vehicle much,you would'nt have a need to restraint. I would just use a regular harness.

both of these shelties here,also wear martingales,but at thier age,theres no way I would use it as a connection to a leash.I feel safer knowing they are in a harness.
 
harnesses

Gavin has a small, light harness for running with me.
I just don't feel comfortable with him on lead with his collar when we are both moving that fast. He is perfect on it when running with me.

He has a harness for his doggie backpack, as well. It has a nice handle for lifting him up over things :D

I bought an easy walk one, but that doesn't get used much.

I must say Gavin hates having them lifted up over his head. He's fine once it's on but getting them on is a different story

I don't like Shelties in harnesses. Or at least my boys. I need to keep collars on them 24 x 7 because they become maniacs when someone comes to the door. I need something to grab onto. But I have very fine collars that I can leave on without matting their fur.

But for walking purposes, I've never seen the need for a harness. Sure, the boys can pull sometimes if they sniff something special, but a gentle tug away is enough.

A properly fitted martingale is all we need.

I agree with Barb IF you are just walking. If you are doing rollerblading/jogging/hiking, than a collar is dangerous, seriously. I would say either the rope-and-go harness for a light weight very simple harness (jogs) and if you do rollerblading or hiking the ruffwear webmaster is perfect. I have done TONS of looking around and i can promise you these, in my opinon are the BEST all around harnessess out there. I get my Webmaster next week!!

Oh no! I go jogging AND rollerblading all the time with a collar. Why is it dangerous? :confused2:

When going moving at any high speeds with a collar on, neck injuries are more likley than with a harness. I have a family member who had rat terrier that jumped off a rock when hooked up to a leash with a collar on when hiking and she wasnt paying attention to what the dog was doing. I dont wanna say what happened but the dog had to be put down after a terrible neck/spin injury. She wont even put a collar on any of her dogs anymore, even when they are in the house.

I have found a many situations when im rollerblading if she runs infront of me, which is every time we go... i can jerk her out of the way with a harness on, and i dont have to be worried about hurting her in any way. And when she stops for a pee when we are going fast, i dont drag her by the neck with the collar on, when i try to stop. Its just nice not ever having to worrie about hurting her.

With the webmaster there is a handle on the top so you can pick them up fast, which i know i will LOVE.

Thats why i think collars can be dangerous, but if your not doing anything really active then a collar is ok!
 
I use a harness for both of my dogs, I found them especially helpful with training. My Maverick was able to escape that also, as a pup as a Houdini dog will. I was actually considering switching to a Martingale collars for both as they really no longer pull, that often.

I like it because she steps into and out of it. It's easy to use. When I went to find this link I see they now make pink ones!! Time for something new for my baby girl!

This is the one that all my pups have- love that it buckles on top :yes:
Cran's was a little loose and he did manage to chew the chest strap. We got a new one - and with better adjustment- it's still good.
They are sold at Petsmart too :wink2:
 
I often wondered what Cranberry had on the day of the gathering.I knew it was leather,but you hardly noticed it was on.

I showed this to Brian,and he really like the look of it.So we will be ordering 2 for Trapp & Jasper,for the NY trip.

I have had great luck with harness's for them,but do not like the fact that thier coats are all crappy looking with straps,and hair bunched up.I don't think it would be comfortable.Plus the colors(red,blue) are not really attractive on them,especially if they are wearing it all the time.

For some apparent reason,Trapp's harness will not go small enough around the neck area,but yet Jaspers fits great.
They are made by two differant suppliers.The harness fits great everywhere else. And I can't go smaller for him,or it won't fit around the girth.(strangly made) I've tried already~
