Heart murmur

Max (15weeks old) has a heart murmur that the vet says could be grade 3 or 4. The vet wants to do an ekg and echo to diagnose. Is this worth the money? Is there anything I can do to help my puppy if there is something wrong with his heart?? He plays well, very active, eats, and drinks plenty of water. I'm super worried about him. All advice/help is much apprecaited.

Hard to say if anything can be done or needs to be done without knowing what the problem is thus why your vet is recommending diagnostics.

There are certain heart conditions that cause murmurs that can be repaired surgically like PDA but it is best to diagnosis that before heart failure starts. There are innocent murmurs that nothing needs to be done. My dog Ember's brother has a murmur(big scary sounding murmur Grade IV out VI). It turned out to be a misalingment of the heart valve that occured during growth(think a cupboard door not properly closing). The hole was the size of the head of a pin. Scary sounding but not life threatening so now he is in monitoring mode for any changes.

Good luck with your little pup. Sending good thoughts your way that noting is serious:smile2:

Emma has a heart murmur. I did an echo before she was spayed just so that we knew what was going on. It is a Grade I and I just have to watch her. The vets I have seen are not sure if she would outgrow it or not.

The peace of mind I had after the echo was worth the money. Because I have pet insurance I got most of the money back.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response guys! we got for a chest xray and echo in a few weeks! I will keep everyone updated on the outcome! keep the prayers coming! :)
