heartgard BAD!!!

I also will not be bringing my new Baby to this vet that treated Jewel and Tasha. It's so difficult because this vet seemed so compasionate and caring but obviously not knowledgable enough for me !!:sadsmile: I have been doing a lot of research on vets in this area and it looks like I have it narrowed down to 2 . This is harder than finding a doctor for myself !!:lol:
 
Dasher takes Senteniel for heatworm prevenative.

I have used Senteniel for years, year round and with not a problem. I have my Sheltie, Yorkie and Chihuahua all on different strengths and they have all done fine. I can get it from my Vet but it is cheaper to order from Entirely Pets. It is the same medication so don't worry about that. Of course you need to fax a written scrip from your Vet to order it. I order it online or you can call it in also. Entirely Pets.com or phone 1-800-889-8967 Fax is 1-866-259-5824.Here in Michigan we have lots of mosquitoes and it is recommended as a year around state for Heartworm prevenative.
I want to say that I am so sorry for anyone's loss do to a reason that makes us feel guilty:(. Just remember they don't hold a grudge with us for anything. Also look for them in Heaven they will be waiting with a wagging tail:eek2:.GOD BLESS you all.
 
I asked a couple vets about this. They always said that Heartgard changed the formula where it no longer causes problems with Shelties & Collies. They said they have never see any dog have a problem with it. I still switched to Intercepter though.
 
Treader has been taking Heartguard almost since I first got him...

Treader takes it and no problems, but then again he isn't purebred and some people (people who are into dogs) say that they don't think that he has Sheltie in him. Some say that he has Corgi, Papillon,or Pomeranian. I seriously don't think that he has Pomeranian at all in him, but Corgi is possible.But Papillon? He is definitely at least 50% Papillon.:yes:
Most agree that he has at least some Sheltie in him though. People are always asking "Is he [or she, some people think that Treader is a female] a Sheltie?".
 
MDR-1 gene mutation

I actually had my boy tested for the MDR-1 gene mutation (I think its the university of washington). He came back normal/normal, which means he won't be succeptible to reactions to the huge list of medications you can find online. Normal/mutant dogs are less reactive than mutant/mutant I still use Sentinel (interceptor plus flea control). But my vet didn't mention it to me, I mentioned it to them. And I got the test done on my own. But people can have a mutation in this gene as well (which causes problems with certain people drugs, as well), but its easier and cheaper to get my dog tested than myself!

I had read about the heartguard on another group and one of my girls was on it with her previous owner. I have all 3 girls on Sentinal and my previous dogs were on Inteceptor. My mom works for a vet office and she says that her office doesn't even recommend heartguard at all because it doesn't work as well. Glad my vet recommended Sentinal for my girls. :biggrin2:
 
My parents have been using heartgard on their sheltie for years! I had no idea! I have a box of heartgard to start sadie on soon so I'll definitely be calling our vet tomorrow! THanks!
 
My vet just gave me Heartgard Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) for my puppy. I didn't give it to him yet because I had thought I heard something about the drug before. Should I return to the vet and request Interceptor?
 
All of Earnhardt's life we have used alternative method of our choice.But we were knowledgeable & informed enough to know what we were doing.

But since Trapp & Jasper have joined the family,we no longer use equine ivermectin. For obvious reasons.

There is so much controversy about Heartguard,but what I do know is that reactions would have to be caused from high doses of ivermectin.Like an owner would have to be clueless as far as the application process,or an impure product not inspected by FDA.(heartguard) Ex..ordering from Ebay,or some online joe shmoe pet source,that are not federally licenced to sell medications.

I would not feel secure using the product unless these pups were tested for MDR1,and it came back normal.

We do use Revolution here,and will continue,as we have a full year supply for the clan here.Once it is all gone,I'll use what our vet recommends for shelties,which is Advantage Multi.
