So I was warned when I got Lilly (The mini dachshund) that she would be one crazy hyper puppy. Things went well (She is now 7mo old).

I was warned when I got Kiko (from these boards) my sheltie about how crazy hyper shelties can be. Things are still going well (approaching 6 weeks). She gets lots of fetch playing time and can acts fairly responsible when its not playtime.

I was not warned when I got Roxy (the mini aussie) about how absolutly insanse these little things are. She gets an attitude when you tell her no (She chomps at you but listens) and there is no time for naps or breaks. Its play play play play play... I have NEVER seen this much energy in a dog. Its like a fluffy lab x10.

To my question...when the 3 dogs play together Roxy will sometimes try to hump one of the other 2 dogs. Lilly and Kiko NEVER did this. I tried looking it up and it seems to be a dominance thing. Roxy is almost 13 weeks old now and I never let the humping go long enough for either dog getting humped to respond (Though they really dont seem to care they just keep playing). Like I said I always tell Roxy "No" when she starts humping and she stops and puts her ears down because she knows shes in trouble. Is this really a dominance thing with her trying to move up in the chain (She is already as big as Kiko and bigger than Lilly. Does her size make her feel like she should be leader of the puppies?)
 
I think with a puppy that young it might be just excitment..LOL
I know my Clancy gets "huggy" when he is all amped up rough house playing.
But...usually they say humping can be a dominance thing...but you would also notice other signs that the dog was trying to be head dog...
For now I'd just interrupt and redirect..do the "Ah Ah" then offer a toy or something to redirect her...

I agree, its really just a play thing - too much exuberance. Kind of like when your big brother put you in a head lock as a kid. Its very common for dogs to use this when playing, esp if they are bigger and dont know how else to direct their play.

I would definately put a stop to the behaviour tho, with her size she could do some damage to the other dogs as she grows, also the other two may pick up her behaviour over time. When you stop her humping give her something else to redirect that exuberance onto - maybe shove a squeaky toy in her mouth and teach her to squeak when shes happy.
 
If the puppies do that in puppy playgroup, my trainer just removes the puppy from the situation and holds the puppy until it calms down. She says that it is just a super excited puppy.
 
Oh well thats good to know. I was just hoping it wasnt like a sex hormone. And I meant to say that Kiko is 6months not weeks. Sorry.

Yes, agreed on the humping, if you take her to the dogpark, I can tell you that other dogs will NOT allow her to hump them, so I would definitely redirect...
Yes, that is why I don't own a Aussie OR a even a Border Collie, when I researched breeds, I seriously continued to always come up with Sheltie.. the other two are all exuberance all the time... and lol at lab X10... hey, did NOT know that was possible, but totally believe you!
