Undoubtedly, some of your shelties nip at your heels from time to time. Just curious what techniques you find work best to discourage this, especially when it’s accompanied by yipping

Oh yes...Piper when he gets going lol! My last boy Riley would all of a sudden out of the blue come up behind me and try to wrap his front paws around my leg...all 38 pound 19" of him! That would always get me laughing. Piper nips me...that gets him a stern SETTLE!!! You could also redirect with a toy or do a bit of obedience.

River does this too, mostly when I'm in a hurry or for some reason when we come back from a walk. He's immune to any reprimand. I usually stop walking but I have to correct him several times before he will stop...and it never breaks the habit. So I'm looking for better suggestions also! I guess I could try redirecting him to do a trick.

Deska was a shocking heel nipper if I moved any faster than a walk. Summer and capris pants and sandals - argh!
I ended up carrying a stick and shoving it in his mouth, eventually he learnt to look for a stick himself and it became a game sometimes with each of us holding the end of a stick and running along.

Mackie nipped me once very hard while I was going fast down the hallway. My reaction, totally involuntary, was to kick. He got a mouthful of foot and that was the end of his nipping period. Thankfully he didn't lose any teeth!

Monty does this everytime the youngest start running around. It's never hard so I just let him get on with it, he usually does a good job stopping her running around lol.

Riley nipped me in the butt once! I was about to go out the door (I'd had him for a few weeks at this point and it was totally unexpected) and he jumped up and nipped...I said OUCH because it hurt! I never turned my back on him again!
You must have sharp reflexes Margi! I'd miss them for sure lol.
