Hello (again) from NJ

I posted awhile back about my new (to me) Sheltie Willow, and asked about how she would be different from the Border Collies I had typically owned. Well, Willow now has a new little sister, Sadie, a sable merle from a local rescue.

She is about 6 months old, and still a little skittish from the abuse situation the rescue saved her from. Her foster parents made a lot of headway with her, so I am hopeful we can bring her all the way back. Today was her first walk on a leash, ever, and she was kind of spooked for large parts of it. Any suggestions on how to get her over her leash fears?

What a cutie!

I'm sure you'll get great advice on the leash thing...my only advice is to take her out for short, frequent walks, and keep it light...just let her see that it's a safe and pleasant experience. If she spooks, just kind of jolly her along and don't give it a lot of attention.

6 months is a tough time- she's a teen and having teen issues so with that and the rescue situation........ lots of time and patience.

let her drag the leash and get used to it- she'll catch on very quickly when there's not so much pressure on her.

My advice too...get a small light leash and when you are there to make sure she doesn't get tangled up in anything, just let her drag it around.

She is adorable and with love and gentle consistent training she will be fine...it just takes time.
