Hello from Pennsylvania

Thank you all!

Wow, what a warm welcome! I just returned from a walk with Alfie and read all your welcome comments - thank you very much.
I'm originally from Poland and have been living in the States for several years now and although I don't have any problems speaking English, writing is a different story. Even reading books (which I do a lot) doesn't help much with my spelling -thank God for all those on-line dictionaries.
Alfie is a sable boy as was Gabby and that's were the similarities end - they have two totally different personalities. Gabby was quiet, laid back, very obedient (even as a puppy), whereas Alfie is loud, very energetic, rambunctious puppy. All this though only at home and in our backyard - outside he is very fearful of sudden noise that car would make, new people even trashcans. That is probably a reason that he doesn't enjoy walks and it is becoming a chore instead of a pleasure for us. We walk him every day at least twice hoping that he will learn to trust us and feel safe, but so far no luck.
Well, for now I just wanted to thank again for a very warm welcome!

Aniu, nawet nie wiesz jak mnie zaskoczylas piszac po polsku! Ja urodzilam sie w Bialymstoku, studiowalam w Gdansku na Politechnice, po studiach przenioslam sie do Gliwic i stamtad przyjechalam z mezem i corka do Stanow.

What a small world we live in! It is so nice to meet people from my home country. There are a lot of us living in the States - Chicago and New York mostly, but here in rural Pa I don't hear Polish language at all.
 
Welcome to the group. :smile2: I grew up in PA (the Laurel Highlands/Cambria County area)- lots of Polish immigrants there a while back so I have Polish ancestors in my pedigree though none of my relatives actually spoke Polish. But winter in PA was too cold so I moved south where I adopted my sheltie from a rescue group. we are very happy here though we do visit the northlands every year.
 
You are right, CalliesMom - there are a lot of Polish immigrants in Pa especially in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas (in both cities there are polish stores with food that I absolutely have to have for Christmas and Easter) and i met some here, but they are at least second generation, so they don't speak Polish. I'm first generation and I miss my home country, but I live here right now, I love the States and am not thinking of going back to Poland. I try to live my life here like I would if I lived in Poland and part of that was having animals around me. I was heartbroken after my first Sheltie, Gabby, died and I still miss her, but after almost a year of not having a dog I couldn't wait any longer so we adopted another Sheltie ( I even took a test on-line to see what kind of breed would be the best for me and no 1 was Sheltie! - I was very happy, but even if it wasn't no.1 breed we still would get a Sheltie - Gabby was the best dog you could have and she made us Sheltie lovers for life). It's been only a month and a half since we got Alfie but I feel like it's been much longer - he is such a joy, a little rascal but we love him very much and cannot imagine not having him around.
 
A late welcome from Sophie, my 7 month old sheltie puppy and myself. As you can already tell, the people on this forum are very friendly. I've been to Poland, Krakow specifically, very beautiful. I am from Russia myself and you are right, the Polish and Russian stores in Philadelphia are great. I live about 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia. They have a Polish food store in NJ right across from the Ben Franklin Bridge. I love it.
 
I love him! He looks alot like my Bacca (even the ears!). Do you know his pedigree by any chance?

I've got pictures of Bacca and the yellow tennis ball as well....almost an identical pose!

BarbV, I have to look at the papers, I actually didn't much care about it, but what got me thinking is that after reading a thread about Shelties coloring i figured out that Alfie might be sable merle! I thought that he was just sable/white - it looks that I have to read a lot more about the breed. I bookmarked the articles about Sheltie genetics and over the weekend I will try to read them.
 
One more thing - I'm soooo rude. BarbV - thank you very much for your comment about Alfie - it makes me very happy when people admire him - I'm so vain on his behalf.....
