*waving hi*

My previous dog passed away (CHF) in summer of 2012. I knew I was moving to Oregon at the end of 2012, and I told myself that I would not allow myself to get another dog until I was settled and had bought a house. Well, it's nearly 4 years later, and I"m settled and have bought a house. :)

My heart is absolutely set on a Sheltie, and I've done a LOT (like, maybe, kind of obsessive...) of research on them, and feel that a sheltie would be a perfect fit for my home and lifestyle. (Gentle, quiet middle-aged household, moderately active, interested in obedience/agility, and possibly a visiting therapy dog to hospitals/nursing homes). I have good fences and actually like brushing/grooming a dog (plus I have a really good vacuum cleaner), so I think we're good there, too.

Thing is, I am having some difficulty actually finding a dog. I admit that I'm super particular, temperament-wise....but also, I really want to adopt an adult or young senior from a rescue, rather than get a puppy. It seems that shelties never come into the rescues in the PNW!

But I am in no particular hurry....and have faith that if I continue to prepare and keep my eyes open, my sheltie will appear. In the meantime, I'm happy to have found this forum so I can learn and find community. I'm also planning on finding the sheltie groups here around Portland (they must be here, right...?) and also checking out agility events this summer, because you just *know* there will be shelties there! :)

Welcome to SN. It sounds like you have a perfect situation to welcome a Sheltie into you life. Best wishes as you search for a rescue Sheltie to adopt. You might also consider an adult or young adult Sheltie that a reputable breeder is either retiring or was being grown out for show and didn't turn out.

Hi and welcome! It sounds like you're well-informed and would provide a great home for a sheltie! All the best with your search :smile2:

Okay, now I'm stalking you. I'm not on the board as much as I used to be, but thought I'd say hello from Portland also.

Welcome to the group.

Have you checked out the Pacific Northwest Shetland Sheepdog Club, Inc?

They have events and contact names and I betcha someone there would know about Sheltie Rescue in the area. Their site also says they are having a specialty even the weekend of July 15-18.

Hi! I'm a fellow Sheltie-obsessor. I am looking for a puppy though, even that's hard!

I did get a rescue Dalmatian years and years ago, though, from a breed specific shelter. I'm in Alabama and had to have her flown in from TX, so yep, it can be rather frustrating. Flying a dog is not an ideal situation, but you might consider it as an option when all else fails? Or get a grow-out from a reputable breeder like trini said!
