I live in New Mexico and have two older shelties: Mollie, who is almost 13, and Daisy, who just turned 12. We have also had shelties in the past. I am especially interested in info on older shelties. Daisy has severe arthritis and cannot take anti-inflammatory drugs, because they upset her stomach. We have recently started giving her glucosamine.

Hi and welcome!! Sorry to hear about your Daisy. At least you live in the best climate available for arthritis.

Glucosamine is good. Fish oil is also useful as an anti-inflamatory. I give both of mine those supplements and they are only 4years and 18 months.

I gave our Sheltie, Chris fish oil for two years. His coat was smooth and shiny and helped with his mobility. Also, fish oil is good for their heart. At feeding time I would take one capsule, pierce it and squirt into his food. He loved it.

Yes, Omega-3's (fish oil) is a natural anti-inflammatory, but remember to give 200 mg of Vitamin E a few times each week along with her meal. Always feed only high quality kibble (I prefer grain free since most older dogs can be sensitive to grains) and provide lots of hugs!

Have you tried given zeros ( generic for Prilosec) in the am and then the anti inflammatory. I would try that for a week before starting the anti inflammatory. This is what our vet had us do. Hoping this helps you and the pups.

Hey , welcome. yes, we love pics of shelties !!! Maybe you could find a facility that does laser tx or hydotherapy and massage. Sometimes these offer relief from arthrirtis along with the supplements.
