HELP!!! Grooming disaster

I cannot even imagine what that would look like?! What would ever possess a groomer to do something like that?

And to think I used to be frustrated with groomers if they didn't know how to trim my pups ears properly!

I also had a groomer convince me to shave his belly in the summer to keep him cool. I didn't realize at the time that his fur his the insulation against cold and heat. Never again! It took a long time for his belly fur to grow back and then barely had enough in winter. But it did grow back.

p.s. I suppose if you took pictures, you might look back 3 years from now and laugh about how silly he looked. :sadsmile:

GeeRome...my poor Holly who has Alopecia, shakes like a leaf here at night when it is 60° (20° C). She does have fur, but it is very limited amount. I live in AZ where snow is an oddity and folks are wearing shirts on Christmas Day. I was amazed at how much heat they lose when shaved ir trimmed so excessively. Right now it is overcast and 75° (23° C) and she is so cold I have a sweater on her. Heck she is usually my pupper who loves to be outside but today she has not left the house to sit outside like she normally does. I guess you would need to watch your baby and see how they respond to the weather. I know dogs in the east coast where the weather is really cold in the winter fare better then a sheltie in the west since they are acclimated to the weather in their area

I have to ask, did you want to choke the groomer? I don't have a clue who to use around my area, there is all the little breeds that need to be trimmed. I haven't heard any good sheltie trimmers or that they even trim them up.

The word is groom, I got to remember that one. Her coat will return, it will take a little while. Good suggestion to use a sweater for this winter if she shivers.

Oh believe me my heart goes out to you, I would be so upset too. I quess a picture printed off would be good to take to a groomer. Even a book, see this is what they are suppose to look like, not skinned.

I've decided to take Sadie to be professionally groomed just before xmas but I'm pretty nervous about it. I'm going to be taking her to a groomer at our local Petsmart because my mother takes her sheltie to her and really likes her. Still, I'm feeling VERY nervous and I'm going to try sticking around to watch. Maybe I can pick up a few grooming tips!

Wow...I can't believe all the grooming horror stories I hear about shelties-from lion cuts to completely shaved!! I can't tell you how terrified I was when it came time to find a groomer for Pogo when he needed to get trimmed up. I got super lucky-I found out that the groomer at my vet's office has two shelties, so she knows exactly what to do, right down to feathering the legs. I think I get a steal, too-a bath, nails, ears, and trim for $20.

Our hearts go out to you rhonda and your pup. Tell the groomer that you have a sheltie, not a Pomeranian (typical victims of the lion cut)!

$20!!!!!!!! Do you ever get a steal of a deal! I wish. I have not had Chinook groomed yet, but with my last sheltie, it was closer to $45-50!

All these horror stories make me realize that when it will be time to get Chinook to the groomer, I better do my research! I would be mortified if he came back shaved or looking like a lion!

I used to be a groomer, so I do my own. I don't "show groom," just bathe, do feet, and tidy them up. Annie Laurie was bathed yesterday, today is Bits, and tomorrow is Layla. Boy, am I going to be popular!

It was at a petsmart that I had poor Jewel, My sheltie Angel come back looking like a puppy. She was cuter than heck but not what I asked for. All her Merle colors really showed up. Her fur grew back without a problem and thicker.

EEP! Yes, all these horror stories are why I learned to groom my dogs myself. At least I know not to shave them down or do something radical like that, so if I mess up a little on the ears or make a toe look goofy, I know it is just minor and will all grow out in a week so that no one would notice. I couldn't bring myself to put their gorgeous fur in the hands of someone that I didn't trust, for fear that there is some miscommunication.
