HELP!!! UTI again???

Hello. I have 7 month old Sheltie puppy, Eevee. She had UTI two weeks ago. I mean 2 weeks ago as in thats when she stopped two rounds of antibiotic treatments. So I guess she's had UTI for whole month before that. During that time, she vomited now and then and didn't really want to eat much.

Today, I noticed the fur around her vulva area is little pink. So I grabbed a tissue and dabbed her privates and sure enough, there was faint pink on the tissue. When I looked at her vulva area closely, I noticed that the areas around it were little irritated and pink sore(?) was there. Looked like skin had split open. Not sure if the pinkness is on the tissue is from the urine or the sore.

I'm going to take her to the vet in the morning. Last time they told me she had Struve crystals in her urine, although UTI was clear. Does this mean UTI has returned? Thank you so much. I'm soooo worried.

We've had her for two months and so far, 4 vet visits, 4 weeks of antibiotic treatments and we are going back tomorrow. I'm beginning to regret getting a puppy. Maybe she wouldn't have all these problems if she had gone to a owner who knows what they are doing compared to the novice like us. I feel sooooo sorry for her. She's sleeping under my feet right now.

I'm so sorry that Eevee is sick again. I know how stressful that can be for a dog, and a new puppy owner.

There are several female puppies on this forum who had multiple UTIs as puppies. My girl Lexi, and Take4Roll10s girl Bailey to name two.

You can't blame yourself because you are doing an awesome job taking care of her. A lot of owners may not have even noticed, or taken such good care of her.

My Gypsy was getting sores down by her vulva due to the fact it is inverted and the urine would settle in between the skin there causing irritation, she also had many UTI's. Since i have started using babywipes each time she empties her bladder no more sores, maybe only one UTI in the last 1 1/2 years. We didn't have any crystal issues so I have no suggestions there.

Did they send away her urine for a culture or just test it for blood in the office? Sometimes, you need to have it cultured to make sure that you are using the correct antibiotic for the specific infection.

After 4 vet visits and spending $460, and after I asked about culturing the urine, they finally took a sterile urine sample with a needle and sent it off for culture today. Why didn't they do the culture first?

This is what happened at the vet.
1. Urinalysis and clavamox 250mg for 14 days - in urine there were crystals, white blood cells, red blood cells
2. Urinalysis, x-ray, and clavamox 250mg fir 14 days - in urine there were crystals, white blood cells. X-ray showed no stones
3. Urinalysis - in urine there were crystals
No treatment for 2 weeks. Said the infection is gone. Suggested I put Eevee on scientific diet.
4. Urinalysis, culture, cephalexin 250mg - in urine today there were crystals, rod-like bacteria, white blood cells

Now Eevee's on Hill's SD dissolution diet for 6-8 weeks to dissolve the Struve crystals and on a different antibiotics for another 14 weeks. We've had Eevee for only two month is getting really really frustrating. Should I change my vet? Are they doing the right thing?

Also, the problem is, Eevee won't eat the SD diet. I mixed it with her normal food and she won't touch it. She won't eat her normal food with SD mixed in either. What should I do? Thank you so much in advance!

I am glad that they sent away the urine for a culture. I hear the frustration in your voice and I am so sorry for all the trouble you are going through with your dog. Shelties really are great dogs and once you get past this hurdle I am sure that you will have a life long pet.

In regards to the dog food. Most people that are not vets say that the dog food is crap....but the vets prescribe it, so I am not sure how to advise you on that.

I would maybe wait and see what the culture says, and then maybe figure out if the new diet is needed.

Good luck and thanks for the update.

I am going through the same thing right now, except my dog jumped from fine to stones. No symptoms until three days ago. She passed right over the crystal part.

I am hoping they are struvite stones, because then we only manage the infection that caused the stones, no diet change needed. Get the right antibiotic, and clear up the infection. And in Liesls case, get the stones out. This is the type of stone I think Liesl has, but we don't know for sure yet.
