Help with Fur Biting

Are you sure you are not confusing this with normal puppy play?

My pups play like this all the time. They grab each other by the scruff and shake, and roll, and shake some more. There are times when I think its beyond play, but I never hear the other one yelp.
 
There is a non-toxic version of tea tree extract but it still needs to be watered down. Problems arise when people use it undilated and it is thought to be toxic for cats because of the way their liver functions. It is used in almost every skin product over here and lots of dog products with no problems. But we grow up with tea tree oil in everything in Australia (similarly with eucalyptus oil) so know not to use it undilated.

Someone here at work now tells me there is a deterrent spray (like Bitter Apple) that contains tea tree oil that they used very effectively. Apparently you can also use peppermint as a deterent! Now that would be funny, peppermint smelling dogs.

Jan - the vet told me licking has a soothing effect so some dogs resort to licking things external to them to distract them from their own itchiness. Of course MMM could just be strange...
 
I totally agree with Lightplum. While you are trying to figure out how to stop it, a dog can totally mow down the coat of another dog. Scolding does nothing. The one I know, doesn't care if it is male or female. For him it is like sucking his thumb. He will sidle up next to a dog and just start chewing on the sides or back. It takes a year to grow back the topcoat showing the correct color. If I think I see even a hint of chewing from a dog, that dog is never left alone in the pack. A lot of people think it is sexual frustration in the case of intact males.

I remember Justice's uncle doing that. His name was Clip and his nickname was Clip the Barber. Nothing stopped him. He was never left alone with another dog or their coat would be gone. He was intact, bred 2 twice but never produced puppies.
 
Hi, I have an intact year and half male who does the fur chewing as well. He's done it to both sexes. He lived with his breeder before being adopted by me. They had to keep him away from their other dogs so he wouldn't chew and ruin their coats as they all do conformation. Im co-owning him now so that he woulnt have to be all lonesome... My Amber doesn't do conformation so I figured it wouldn't be bad. Then I saw how pitiful she looked with choppy fur on her bum haha. So anyway I hate the idea of keeping him secluded off and amber not having a buddy, I started putting a doggy shirt on Amber when I'm away. He hasn't chewed on her since. He seems to never do it when I can catch him, that little booger.
