Help with Sheltie's Diet?

multiple people on the forum have fed Acana and Orijen. I've used both but Orijen is a little pricier here. I feed one brand for about 3 months and then switch to something else so they don't get bored and we're not dependent on any one company.
My rescue sheltie was prescribed Grandma Lucy's- she loved it but it would be too pricey to feed to four shelties......

Thank you so much! I'm a bit worried about her reaction to either of the foods as I've heard that some dogs aren't particularly used to the richness which can cause some stomach problems, but Ill see if they sell any sample (or really small) bags to start with :).

that is very true that some dogs have issues- so maybe start with Acana as it is a lower protein. I believe that my store sells 5 lb bags so that might be the way to start out.

I'm not really a promoter of raw diets per se, but I think a good balance of healthy diet and convenience is to go half-and-half between kibble and meat. I could do either cooked or raw, but raw is more convenient, and I think, based on what I've read, that it's better for the dog's digestive system. For my 43-pound Dickens I give a cup of Blue Buffalo per day, with three ounces of raw beef (usually chunks of round) at the evening feeding and a turkey neck (or something similar) every other day. I wouldn't want to give up the kibble because it's got added vitamins and lends just the right amount of fiber.

Thanks guys for the help! The Wellness brand that we're using currently has 4.5 stars on Dog Food Advisor (which I never knew if I could trust but have always loved the website), but Ill look at acana. I would be a bit worried about her weight, as she is a bit overweight currently and we're trying to get it down. Ill look into the freeze dried raw foods too. Anyways, thanks again!

My 2nd sheltie couldn't tolerate Wellness at all...not sure why, but for her she just had an awful time on that line of kibble, and she didn't like it at all. I finally gave up on it. Some of my friends had trouble with that brand also. Dog Food Advisor is a good resource, but if you have a natural pet food store in your area, they typically get info quicker about what is going on in the pet food industry. I have learned so much from my local pet food store. Why they carry certain brands, etc. And if you have a chance, talk to the reps, Petsmart and Petco do have hostings for the different companies come to promote their brands on occasion.
