Hemorrhagic Gastritis Clostridium

Clara got into some bacteria in our yard (thanks to the over abundance of rain we've had). Yesterday, she refused to eat- even with yogurt coating her food. Then around 8, DH looked down and saw bloody diarrhea on the floor. She vomited all night. I woke up in vomit at 2 am. Like literally, she threw up ON me at 2 am. So, we went to the vet today and got diagnosed with those words up there. 4 medications for the next two weeks.

And I got to get myself a package of Ding Dongs because I woke up in a puddle of vomit at 2 am.

Oh my! That is not good. I hope Clara gets to feeling better and she will start eating soon. I understand the issue with all the rain. Mushrooms are becoming a problem in my yard. I try to keep an eye on Cleo every time I let her outside because I know she would eat one if she found it. I have been having to keep her away from the toads too. Rain is not always a good thing...

Oh gosh, lucky you caught it in time. Deska has had HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis) twice now. I know there is at least one member on SF who lost their dog to HGE and there are a couple of people I've met on our walks who lost their dogs to HGE. It can be very dangerous if not caught in time so you did well getting her to the vet straight away. Make sure you keep her fluids up - it's really key to getting through HGE (along with the metronidazole). Boiling up some chicken and giving her the broth is a good way to get her to drink.

It's interesting you mention she picked up the clostridium bacterium in your backyard. I have a huge problem with Deska eating moist dirt in winter then getting upset stomach and diarrhoea. I've got to watch him like a hawk when he's outside to stop him chewing at the ground. Tully's started doing it now too. I don't know what possesses them. I've tried adding supplements to see if it's a mineral deficiency, but I think it just tastes nice. I have chicken wire and trellis all over the ground where he digs at, but it only slows him down (and I can't cover the whole yard). It drives me nuts because as soon as he does it I know we'll be dealing with gastro. If you have any ideas how to stop the dirt eating please let me know.

I now keep metronidazole at home so I can get him on it as soon as he shows signs of diarrhoea. Don't want to ever be caught out again. It's worth having it around for peace of mind.

It's rained more here than it hasn't. It isn't a typical Indiana summer. The vet said he has seen a lot of cases of it this year. Clarabelle's tummy is a lot more sensitive than the others. Not sure why, but she's the first to hurl in the car. So- HOPEFULLY, it will dry out a bit and the others won't get this too.

Glad you caught it in time. I hope she is on the mend and is back to normal soon! My dog had bloody diarrhea and vomiting when she was about a year old. She was mostly back to normal in a few days after the meds. But would occasionally have a little blood in her stool a few weeks later.
