Here We Go Again

Flurry had her regular gallbladder ultrasound this morning. When we checked it last a few months ago, her sludge was at 50 percent so we've been watching it every few months. Today it's at 80 percent. It's still fluid with no mucoceles, but she'll be heading to surgery as soon as I can get her scheduled. She'll be my fourth Sheltie having her gallbladder out.

I had high hopes that 2026 would be an improvement over 2025, 2024, 2023 and 2022 but six days in it's not looking promising. 🫤

Crapola. What a curse this gallbladder issue is. At least you've been through the drill and know what to expect. My vet joked to me that maybe they should offer spay and gallbladder removal as a package.
I'm so sorry you and Flurry have to go through this and the financial hit is real. I know she'll be fine though and then no more worries on that score. Hang in there!

Oh man you just can't get a break can you? I am so sorry! Keep us posted on Flurry....

Wonder what it is that tips the scales for some shelties with gallbladders and others not at all.. genetics? environmental influences? food? Wish there was some answer and some solution to preventing this before it even starts. I really hate the worry over the gallbladder.... sorry you are dealing with this again.

Geez Ann…one dog after another! I’m so sorry this is happening again but I’m glad you’re so on the ball where your dogs are concerned!
I remember reading a couple years ago how researchers thought there was a connection between a tick medication and gallbladder problems in Shelties…I wonder if there’s been any further correlation since then?

I'm pretty sure that connection was made with Advantage. And as I recall, the Seresto collar was also under suspicion.

Yes, it was Advantage. And several of the collars are also implicated in causing reactions as well as Nexguard and some of the other oral flea/tick products. I don't use any of them. Our Sheltie club is arranging a seminar this year with the lead research vet on Sheltie gallbladders and she's asked for members who have dogs of various ages who've had them removed for her study. I think I can fill her schedule .....

I got an appointment for January 30 with the surgical facility for her consult. They're down to one surgeon and booked solid. It's the surgeon who removed Ruffles' gallbladder and he's very good so I'm hoping we don't have any problems until then.

I am so sorry to hear your news, I know you have been through it before, but it doesn't make it any easier.
I am so glad you still have a Surgeon you trust. Let's hope they can get you in for a surgery date after your evaluation appointment..
Our thoughts and prayers for Flurry to have a great outcome. If you need anything just holler
