He's chewing on me!

However, it's a good idea to make sure your tetanus shot is up to date. I recommend trying this: when he bites, say in a low, gruff voice (not shouting, just low), "No bite!" As soon a he stops -- and you may only have a nanosecond, say, in a high voice, "Good boy!" Shaking a can of pennies simultaneously can help, too. If he's not afraid of pennies, you can try a puff from a can of Dust-off (available in camera supply stores). Air is much better and less messy than water from a squirt gun. Most dogs hate a puff of air in the face.

Yeah. I just had a tetanus shot right before I got Smudge. I think it was May 12th when I got it.

I've tried using a squeaky toy that he hates and having it in my hands or within reach at all times. Everytime he goes to chew on me I squeak the toy. It distracts him, but only for a minute. I used to be able to get him to shake hands, and now I can't even get him to do that anymore. He wants to bite instead of shake. Mind you, he's only playing. It's not an angry bite.

The Dust Off usually gets their attention very quickly. We always have it on hand at Doggie Play Group, especially if there is a new dog joining the group. It is a winner at stopping unwanted behavior and doesn't actually hurt the dogs - it only surprises them. You can also get this at Staples, etc.

Welcome to Sheltie nipping! Believe it or not, it does go away eventually. You just need to be consistent and firm about it. Now, instead of nipping me, my boys bounce all around me in circles! So much better!
