Hello from Jakarta, im new to the forum and to a sheltie.
After about a year searching which best breed for us (me and my wife), we decided to adopt a sheltie from a local breeder.
Their compact size, beautiful face, intelligence and family oriented (kindness) that make us finally choose a sheltie for our first dog.
Although we've been warn about how talkative they are and the fur, we commit to bear it.

So the story begin at end of June, we brought Barney a 9 weeks sable sheltie to our home.
At the beginning we bit worried about him in our home (new environment), but surprisingly he adapt perfectly.
He sleep without whining nor crying. Eat and potty normally.
First week at home (hardest week), finally he pass the crate training successfully and potty training on the next week. So at 3 weeks at home, he already housebroken puppy.
We feel very lucky to have such a smart and lovable sheltie. And about our concern talkative, surprisingly he quiet enough.
Right now he learn a lot of tricks and we just amaze how smart shelties are.

Thats little story about Barney, our first sheltie. Now he almost 6month old and hopefully we have a wonderfull journey ahead

Very pretty and very happy puppy. I laugh because last night in dog class I was teaching my Cubby the same thing with a treat on his foot and leave it. He did not look so happy as your puppy, but he ignored his treat just like your puppy.

But watch!! you can't only have one sheltie, they are adictive! :wink2:

I am so glad to hear you are training him and being concerned over every aspect of his behavior! Hats off to you!

You are lucky with not having carpet in your home... so much harder to keep up with those pesky tuffs of hair!!!

So cool to have folks from all over the world that LOVE SHELTIES!

House Training

How did you house train?! We have a 3 month old and have had him for 2 weeks and we aren't making much progress. Any suggestions?
 
Hello Jo, Fe and Barney, welcome to the Sheltie Nation. You were right to pick the Sheltie for your first dog, they are real easy keepers, your little fur baby is adorable and you are right, Shelties are one smart breed and we here love them a whole lot. Thank you for sharing Barney's pictures with us, he is just too cute and it will be fun watching him develop and grow into adulthood. :smile2:

We use crate for house train our puppy. We associated his crate with his den or "home" for him. So its nature for puppy not to soil his den.
We crate him at night when sleep. I read in several the web, puppy can hold only for several hours (age in month+1hours). i.e: 3 month = so he can hold 3mo + 1hours=4hours. supposed every 4 hours, you bring out your puppy to do his business.
But amazingly barney in 2,5 month can hold at overnight for 7-8 hours. And he eliminate in the morning when we bring him out of his crate. I think we got very lucky with this puppy. So the crate always clean.
And if he accidentally eliminate in the crate (only twice :biggrin2:), we must clean it up immediately and remove all the smell.

For potty training, I use paper in one specific indoor area (we use toilet).
If he make some sign like sniff, walking around we bring him to that area and said "Potty" or "go Potty". If he does it, we give lots positive reinforcement like: praising him ("good/smart boy", "yes", etc) and give him a treat.
If we spot him eliminate at house, we just say "no" and get him to that potty area to continue his "business".
But if we don't spot, then we just clean it and remove the smell.
So your puppy must be full supervised when he play in your house.
Thats we do in early weeks (the hardest week for us).

To create habit, until now we always schedule his feeding time (6am and 6pm). So we know his toilet habit.

And the last tips, in every training always use positive reinforcement (lots of praise, treat, plays, etc).. thats really work in my opinion.
