What a wonderful forum!
Two years ago yesterday I met my wife. We met on match.com and after emails and phone calls decided to get together for lunch. Six hours later she said, "Let's go to my place and meet my pets..."
I had two cats and she had two cats and a dog. A Sheltie.
Understand that up until that time I had never been a dog person. What I didn't know was that Dawn liked me...and wanted to see how her pets interacted with me.
I was greeted by two black cats and this beautiful, friendly, smart-as-a-whip, brown-eyed furface Sheltie. He barked...but his tail as wagging. The rest, as they say, is history.
On our third date I asked that we take Mr. Spock (named for his expressive ears) to the park to play. I was falling in love...with a girl and her Sheltie.
Fast forward, we married last October. Being that our combined four children are adults, we decided to get another Sheltie to add to the fray. We got another boy, Fergus, who is now nine months old.
Spock is as beta as a dog can get. Fergus? Fergus has CADD: Canine Attention Deficit Disorder. He's so fast that I swear he can be in two places at once. He loves agitating the cats, but the cats have advantage he hasn't quite figured out yet: They go vertical! Up on the couch and out of the way while Fergus stands there with a "Where'd it go?!?" look on his furface.
What have I learned in the past two years? I've learned that I'm not so much a dog person as I am a Sheltie person. They are very, very special dogs with very, very special souls. They listen. They're intuitive...when I'm having a bad day, Spock hangs by me and cuddles up for a talk. He looks at me with those big brown Sheltie Eyes, and sighs with understanding as I tell him my tale of woe......and when I take "the boys" out to play...to chase a ball or catch a frisbee...I look at them and I know they're smiling.
The lesson for me? Be careful what you pray for...I prayed that God would send me a woman to share the rest of my life with...little did I know that God would send me this wonderful woman and open the rest of my life to the love of these wonderful brown eyed smiling souls called Shelties!

They are an absolute fantastic breed. I have had many dogs in my life and cats but They Sheltie has changed my life. They are awesome. I have loved all my animals but none have touched my life quite as much as my Sheltie Angel, Jewel:sadsmile:. She was my first Sheltie, she was a Blue Merle with gorgeous Blue eyes. The eyes sold her to us and thus the name Jewel. We lost Jewel last year on Oct, 26th, 2007. We had her cremated and have her ashes with us . She is to be buried with me upon my rejoining her at the Rainbow bridge.
...thank you for sharing it with us. As you've found, not only are Shelties very special dogs, so are Sheltie people. We are happy to have you join us and hope you find lots more kindred souls on this forum. It's a great place! And congratulations on your marriage as well!
