Hip Dysplasia Question

Today, is my last day to decide if I want to add hip dysplasia to Bailey's health insurance. I have trupanion health insurance for her. I'm paying $33 a month. To add hip dysplasia coverage, it's an extra $5.99 a month. Is it worth is? Is hip dysplasis common in shelties? Is treatment expensive? What do you guys think? Should I get it?

In my experience, hip displasia is generally found in larger breeds where it is a recurring problem. You don't hear too much of it in Shelties, although that's not to say it can't happen. If I were deciding though, I'd pass on that one for insurance. Just my two cents!

You could always have an xray done if your vet thinks that might give a better indicatiom. In the long run, that would be a lot cheaper than $6 a month.

I just googled it and apparently a hip replacement is $3000-$5000! $6 more a month is $72 a year. $72 a year is a lot cheaper than $5000. I think I will add it on. I did get her from a breeder, who gave a print out showing her parents, grandparents, etc OFA score and they all passed.

Most breeders will have an OFA rating for the hips of the dogs they breed. If the OFA rating was a good or an excellant for both parents, I wouldn't worry about it.

If both parents are ofa clear most likely yours wont have a problem, however if you want to check for youself, just have a OFA done, its not too expensive I think it was around $120 to have mine done and that was with sending it off to be OFA read and registered and the cost of the vet doing the xray. If you continue to pay $6 a month for the rest of his life it is kind of expensive, but if you dont mind spending the $$$$$$ than go ahead, personally I dont use the insurance plans because they end up costing more than you actually get out of them.. just my 2 cents though.

I added it on because yesterday was the last day to do that. When I get some extra money, I'll get the xrays done and if she gets a good result, i take it off the plan. thanks guys
