Hitting Mommy?

Well..the little monster!! LOL Thats what we call Abby when she does this!! She mostly does it to the back of our legs when we are going to feed them..herding and makeing us hurry up...

They say dogs do what works...so don't let it work for them, and they will stop..and most likely think of other ways to control us!! LOL

I wouldn't crate them...you should never use the crate as a punishment. Plus it won't work, they won't figure out what they are being punished for..just will prolly start not likeing their crate..and that won't work for you!!

This is what we do when they get bossy and want something...they must say "please" and we get to decide what they must do to say "please". I use a sit or a down and they must do it quickly and be still til I release them.
So basically don't even react to their pawing and swatting..just ask for a sit or down (or whatever you decide for them to do) If they swat at you again...just stand and wait for them to do the sit and settle down. The first few times, it may take a bit for them to catch on...but you will actually see the "light bulb" go off over their head..hehehe

If they are really unruly..you can go full out "nothing in life is free"...this is when they must do a command for everything they want in life..want outside, sit nicely...want food...sit nicely...putting the leash on...sit nicely...want to play..sit nicely...etc...

Clancy always comes and sits right in front of us and lays his head in our lap or leans on our legs when he wants something. He's learned, hey they are gonna make me sit, may as well assume the position now..LOL

It always cracks me up to hear stories on how cat like these Shelties are..I've had 3 and all of them have some sort of cat like behaviours...

Megan has a certain bark when she is talking back to me..She'll be 5 months next Monday and will get growly and nippy if I am trying to get something out of her mouth. She gets certain barks when she is "arguing" with me!

Deja carries on conversations at times, usually during training. She will bark when I tell her to back up and then will do a wierd barking growl under her breathe if I make her sit longer than she wants and if I do a command that she thinks sher should be getting a treat for but I chain another command with it.. boy howdy!

Bacca likes to poke me with his snout. Both boy's will paw at me when they want attention. And when I'm preparing breakfast, Bacca jumps around so much and gets so excited that he's pushed me from behind into the counter. I don't know if that's what you mean by "hitting"????

Either way, like the others, I try to discourage it by redirecting, ignoring (i.e. turning my back), or in the case of breakfast....stopping what I'm doing, facing them both and telling them to "settle" and not start again till they quiet down.

It's working...slo-o-o-owly!:wink2:

Ivy was the one who used to "hit" me. She'd poke me whenever she wanted to go outside--she was the only one of our dogs who's ever done that. The rest have all learned to just bark at the door. She would also poke us when she wanted to be patted...gently at first, just a tap with no nails out, and then more insistently!

Pixie is the sassy one in the family. She has a whole vocabulary of barks. She'll start soft and get increasingly louder and more insistent. You just know she's talking to us. And when we say "no" to one of her demands, like going outside for the 98th time just to smell the air, she'll give us backtalk. She is relentless! :rolleyes2:

Romeo doesn't know how to tap without using his nails, so he would claw my face when he wants me to wake up when nosing me doesn't work. Thankfully he doesn't do this often and thankfully I dremmel his nails often. Unfortunately I just can't NOT move and yell out when I get clawed awake - Romeo knows it ALWAYS WORKS!

Sadie hits DH and I, usually when we're in bed, trying to wake up. It started out as a game. Sadie was always very cat like when she played as a pup, we'd put our hand over her paw, she'd put her paw on top, etc. Then she started trying to do this in the morning when we are still groggy. She lies on one of our chests with her face six inches from one of our faces. The next thing we know, we get a paw/claw in the face. :rolleyes2:

Smudge "slapped" me once when I was taking his picture. I caught it on camera, too! I'll have to see if I can find it up. When I say he hates the camera - I really mean he hates the camera!

When I turn to get treats out of the tin, Layla smacks me on the butt with her front feet.

Haha Ember does that too. She did it once to my obedience instructor.:o Ember was off leash and just finished the directed jumping. As I was going to hook her up, the instructor turned away from Ember and face the tablle where the treats were. Ember took off and hit her square in the butt with before front feet.:eek2: It a good thing her teacher loves her.
