Holistic Flea and Tick repellant

natural stuff for fleas

Has anyone used holistic flea and tick repellants and, if so, how effective have they been? I am starting to see a correlation between Pixie's seizures and the use of chemical spot-ons. I've used Frontline on her at my vet's recommendation since we live in a high tick area, but have noticed that she only has seizures in the months I treat her with the Frontline, and never in the winter. If there's an effective holistic product available, I'd like to try it.

I'd love advice on what to try and where to get it from anyone who's used holistics. Thanks!

Hi Ann, I had a terrible flea infestation two years ago and I really did not want to use the chemicals in Frontline on my dog. I have found Fleabusters (look on the web) you put it in the carpet and it has taken care of the infestation. I have used it now for two years and no fleas and I have not needed to use Frontline. I am not sure about ticks, but check it out, it REALLY works. I would be too afraid to continue with Frontline if it is causing seizures. It sounds to be TOO dangerous!! Also, since you see a correlation with the seizures and the time you use Frontline. I would STOP using it immediately.

Natural Defense,If I remember correctly does'nt it smell like cinnamon? It may work, but the smell of it brought tears to our eyes it was so strong.

Thankfully, I haven't had to worry about this with Ariel. Yet.

My first Sheltie was a tick magnet and even Frontline didn't work very well.
I'm sure it didn't help a whole lot, but I always mixed some Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil in with the water I used to spray her when she was brushed every day.

Actually I remember years ago reading that Avon's Skin-so-soft worked pretty well as a mosquito repellant (and smelled a whole lot better!). Perhaps it would work on fleas as well.

Thanks for the information! I've actually been using the Sergeant's Natural Defense product on Pixie all season this year with great results. She wasn't crazy about the clove smell the first time, but ever since she's been fine. No fleas and very few ticks. But it's good to know about Fleabusters for anyone who gets them in the house.

When the vet found the deer tick on Bacca a couple of weeks ago, she immediately put both boys on K9 Advantix. I was a little concerned about it because it seemed to be super high powered treatment. The technician even cautioned that if they start to scratch and itch, to rinse if off immediately.

I applied it to both and neither one of them had a single complaint.

Now the vet gave me a dosage to last until November but I won't be doing that. I'll give them September while we are still at the cottage, and store the rest for next season.

I know many of you have valid reasons for avoiding Revolution, Advantix, Interceptor, etc. because of reactions that your dogs have had. But I would rather have Lyme-free dogs and risk a little to avoid it. I guess, I tend to want to more rather than less aggressive and avoid it altogether.

My boys were on Revolution before that, and nary a flea to be found.

We've used K-9 Advantix for years here, never a problem.Actually we like it so much better as it will also repel mosquitos, and Frontline plus does not.Are there issues with Advantix & shelties?

Cause if so,I need to rethink what to use,as we certainly don't want our new babe to get ill with it.We don't maintain Earnhardt year round.I have never had a problem with fleas, any time of year.In the spring we start maintaining him, right thru till very late Oct-Nov. And I have never even found a tick on him.I also put a drop of eucalyptus oil on his collar once a month, cause of the darn knats we get here when it is so hot & humid.

I was wondering about Revolution~

I have sat here and read I don't know how many reviews on Revolution. As it is the newest of topical treatments. Every review I read, gave it more than 5 paws up..and then some.Every customer rating was very good.

It not only treats fleas, ticks, but also effective with ear mites, and also sacroptic mange, but also effecitve treatment for heart worm.

So I have ordered for Earnhardt. I found it at:

I had Romeo on Frontline until recently when I found out that it could be affecting his nervous system and hence might be making his leg problem worse. I'm now searching for a holistic alternative. I've been giving garlic as a start.

Has anyone tried diatomaceous earth or neem oil?

Any Experience with Liquid Net for Pets?

Our breeder terrified Vicky & I about some of the effects that Advantix or Frontline can have, telling us that she's never had a problem with fleas & ticks on her Shelties so she'd wouldn't recommend an oral med and has reservations about topical meds.

For the past month, we've been using Liquid Net for Pets:

...it appears to be working. We've suffered multiple mosquito bites for the past month but Kiyomi seems just fine. She's had no problems with fleas or ticks thus far. She smells like a walking citronella candle with a touch of lemongrass though.

Does anyone else have any experience with Liquid Net for Pets? Do all-natural solutions work as well as the pharmaceutical ones?

Thanks!
