Holistic/Naturopathic Vet and or Nutritionist focus

Hi All! Not sure if this is the best place to post this request....

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a vet with a holistic/naturopathic focus and nutrition expertise in the Boston and surrounding area? I live just south of Boston MA and am willing to drive up to 30 miles for a great vet.

I have been working with an animal hospital now with a Naturopath and just took my dog in for an ultrasound today after getting blood tests back with high liver values. I have a gut feeling the food I am feeding may not be the right food and contributing to this - I could be wrong - but each time I ask this doctor, he is impatient, condescending, sighs at me and discounts my concern about the high protein level in the food I am feeding - which is Orijen 6 fish brand by the way (switched from TOTW due to recall). grrr I don't like being treated this way when I am already nervous about what could be wrong with my precious dog and usually when I have an instinct, I am right - though no medical degree
so I could really use a good recommendation if anyone has one.

Tank you ! Oh, and please send positive thoughts that all is well with Frankie's tests today.

I'm sorry, I don't have any advice regarding a holistic vet in your area.

But I have had a lot of success using holistics, naturopathic medicine and homeopathic medicine for myself and for Toby. Its most definitely worth a shot. THere are also some great natural liver support supplements on the market that are safe for dogs. I take one myself and have also given it to Toby.

I just want to put this out there, but if you feel Orijen 6 Fish is the wrong food, then change it. You know whats best for your dog, you don't need to ask someone else, especially when that someone is kind of rude to you, by the sounds of it. Not meaning to be rude, that's just my opinion, take it or leave it.

I'd also like to say though, that Orijen 6 fish is a good quality food, however a dog with liver underlying liver issues may have trouble with it. Y

You could try switching to Acana, which has lower protein levels that are more typical to higher end dog foods. Since both Orijen and Acana are manufactured by the same company the switch shouldn't be a big deal. I'd suggest Acana Pacifica, many of the ingredients are identical to Orijen and there's no chicken in it either. I think you said in a previous thread you didn't want chicken as an ingredient. :smile2:

Thanks - I appreciate it and the vote of confidence for my gut instinct. Medicine has not caught up all the way yet with some of the more alternative methods and I more often than not go it alone or alternative for myself - I guess it is a little more daunting for my beloved doggie :rolleyes2: I would never want to make a mistake. I have considered Acana and will check into it again - yes, no chicken - good memory  you all pay attention on this site. This has been a rough day - still waiting for test results and I am less impressed with my vet all the time and losing confidence and I kind of feel helpless since I don't know what is wrong yet. Sorry to vent - just want my dog back and healthy!

Thanks again!

ps - your dogs are so cute!

I'm sorry that your vet is causing you more stress, thats exactly what you don't need right now. Hopefully you can find someone else you're happy with and can trust. I'll pray for good test results.

Vent away, that's what we're here for. :smile2:

Thank you! So helpful - really :hugs

Ultrasound all clear  yay! except for 'sludge' in the gall bladder hmmm - so bile acid test will come back on Friday or Saturday to see what may be causing this - still praying for good results. :fl but Frankie seems to be feeling better at this point.

Wonderful news that the ultrasound was clear. Praying for good bile acid test results! Keep us posted! :fl

Update on this - bile acid was not so good - so Frankie has been on Actigal for a week so far - will be for a month - and... he is doing so much better! He seems like himself again - spunky and brighteyed and fiesty - no more droopy! But we are watching him and will retest at the end of the month - another blood test - to see where his liver levels are and hope not to do another ultrasound or bile acid. Thank you all for your prayers - this can be so scary and tricky but I know the positive love and thoughts DO indeed make a difference. :hugs
