Well it turned out the light was just another train heading for me.
No surgery today.
Oh no-- we have to start all over at square one. Retake all the images cuz the others are too old.
This is what I had in my email from the surgery center when I got home:
DIAGNOSIS and PROBLEMS:
1. Chronic constipation issues.
2. Recently diagnosed bilateral perineal hernia.
PROCEDURE PERFORMED:
1. Exam and surgical consultation.
2. Abdominal radiographs and ultrasound.
DISCUSSION:
Although perineal hernias can cause straining to defecate and constipation, since the symptoms
apparently preceded the hernias in this case (per previous records and exams), we are concerned
that hernia repair may not resolve the underlying symptoms. However hernia repair with a muscle
flap is recommended. Usually we can do both sides simultaneously depending on how they are
doing under anesthesia and surgeon discretion. Complications of hernia repair are relatively
common, and can include continued straining/constipation, recurrence of the hernia, fecal
incontinence, rectal prolapse, and infection/healing complications. We will call with the results of the
imaging today as soon as reports are available. Estimate for bilateral hernia surgery was provided
and will be reviewed and possibly revised by Dr. Shelley the day of surgery. Estimate does not
include any follow-up treatments or revision surgery.
Return to Mountain View Animal Clinic for all other veterinary care.
This one broke me. I shouldn't have gotten optimistic about anything.
They will call after the certified radiologist reads all the scans and xrays.
This surgeon thinks Dr Amy, Dr No and their own inhouse internist Mrs Dr No should have or would have felt/seen a hernia during the rectals.
And he didn't seem reassuring about fixing the hernia either! Look at all the complcations listed there.
Benny and I are gonna take a nap. My poor little best boy...
