Housetraining Help

Hi I've had my girl for a little over a week. She's only ten weeks old and she holds it as long as she can and hasnt had an accident in about 5 days. When i take her outside she goes potty as soon as she gets there. I take her out every 1-2 hours. My question is when will she start "asking" to go out, barking scarring the door etc? I really wasn't expecting her to do this well but she's very smart so I'm not surprised either :). How old was your puppy when it started "asking" to go out?

The funny thing with Shelties ... they don't always go to the door and bark. Mine pace back and forth and keeping coming up to me and staring really hard. Then they go and look at the door. We put them on a 4 hour schedule during the daytime once they got used to going on the paper ... and then we moved it outside.

I think they are all different.
Miss Sadie would go to the door and just sit there.
It took her a couple weeks to put noise into the wait.

Mine rings a bell - the kind you see on reception desks or in restaurants! I had to train it though.

It was quite simple. Every time I took my puppy out I pushed the bell with her paw after saying ''ring the bell'', then I opened the door while praising her. Eventually when she started holding it longer, I would first bring her in front of the bell (which was right in front of the door) and tell her ''ring the bell'' and wait for her to ring it. The first few times I had to take her paw and ring it again but she eventually caught on that ringing the bell meant I would open the door. That was around 12 weeks of age... quite early! Good luck with your potty training :wink2:!

Had the same problem with our girl. She would not let us know. Was not a barker etc. So we bought "the bell"

Official dog ringing on door bell - we got ours at Pet Valu.

Well we showed her it a few times on a Sat. night after we brought it home. Would just ring it & make her pass by it on her way out. By Sunday morning she was there ringing it herself! And she continues to do so! Julip is 20 weeks now. Got it at about 12 weeks?

Know its not the way to go for everyone - but we love it!!! :smile2: She never had a pee in the house since & only a couple poops? But all has been good for weeks now - think we are totally potty trained - YAY!

I've since put it on a nail by the door instead of ON the door, as I didn't like it ringing EVERY time WE opened the door  And with warmer weather often the screen door is the door that is there (real door is open - so bell would be against wall - so she couldn't ring it)

I say its worth a try! Did the trick here! Good luck!

None of my dogs ever learned to bark to ask to go out. Usually it is just some pacing activity or sitting in the hall by the door. Tinsel doesn't settle and has whimpered a couple of times. Rhiannon whimpers if she is desperate and Phoebe just goes and sits near the door. We taught Rhi the bells when she was a baby but had to remove them eventually as she started ringing when she wanted to go out and play or just wanted our attention. By that time she was fully housetrained though so it didn't really matter.
Puppies are usually about 4 months before they can hold it for long enough for me to call them housetrained. They might try not to have an accident and ask to go out but they don't have full control til then so accidents can happen. Usually by 10 weeks they are fully capable of going all night when the house is quiet and they are sleeping but not during the day because they are awake and alert. If they are forced to be in a crate long enough to soil it, it becomes much harder to train them so frequent trips, staying out with them until they do what they are there to do and lots of praise for a job well done will resolve the first issue that a puppy owner faces. The next is chewing as they lose teeth. Crates used correctly are great. They give a dog a safe place to go to when they need it, are a fabulous training tool and help to prepare a dog for those overnight stays at a vet's BUT, they can be abused too. I never use one for punishment or it defeats the purpose of making it a good place. I don't confine dogs for long periods of time during the day either. When Tinsel came he had to be in a crate more than any dog I have ever raised because he was a puppymill stud and I had to make sure he couldn't mark but he got an oversized Belgian Sheepdog sized crate so that he could stretch out fully and stand up fully. Now he is loose in the house when I go out and only crated for bed.

Cran was home for about a week when he started going to the door during the day. so 8-9 weeks old- but he's a special boy. he also was lifting his leg around that time too:winkgrin:
