Housetraining

My puppy is only 13 wks now and I'm we're not doing well with potty training. He will pee on his pads and poop on his pads, then he'll just pee on the rug standing right In front of me! And he poops and pees soooo much and so often. I'll take him outside for a hour and he'll play and run and then lay in the grass. Then he will walk back inside and pee or poop! Help!

I know many of us on here don't like using puppy pads. Is there a reason why you're using them? I think it confuses things (it's okay to potty inside here, but not here).

I would say the first thing you should do is take away the opportunity for him to go in the house. If he goes and plays outside for an hour and does not potty, he needs to go in his crate or be tethered to you. Try again in 5-10 minutes. If he does go, YAY throw a party and he can play free for a bit. I also don't usually let the pup play outside until he has pottied, so we typically go out on a leash, and then I take it off after he goes.

Also, if the puppy is tethered to you and makes a mistake, it's easier to catch him in the act, scoop him up and take him out. If he finishes pottying outside, throw a party and give him a cookie.

I'd say 90% of the time that the puppy potties in the house, it's my fault because I wasn't watching closely enough.
