The only recommendation I have to add to what's already been said is to teach him to come to your heel and treat him at your heel (both right and left sides) instead of with him in front of you. A recall to heel is very important for tight turns on a course. We start training the recall to heel right from the very first class.
We use Linda Mecklenburg's jumping system at my club. The book "Developing Jumping Skills (http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=1457&ParentCat=171) is a highly recommended book for learning jumping foundations from Recall to Heel through Extension and Collection jumping forms.
