How long did it take your sheltie to......

Just thought it would be fun to find out how long:
Did it take your sheltie to go up and down stairs with confidence and no mistakes along the way?

Answer: We sleep upstairs and everything else is down stairs. She and Darby got into races up and down at about 4 months. I do recall one instance when Deja was losing running down the stairs and all of the sudden she flew past Darby and smacked our wall.. I know what you're thinking.. She should get penalized for using foriegn objects as breaks but she was so cute afterwards with her head bobbing about.. we had to give her the point!

How soon before your sheltie was barking when someone came to the door??

Answer: She started barking at strangers the day after we brought her home.. 9 weeks old.

How long before a leash was no longer needed???

Answer: We live in town so leash law and my heart demand a leash at all times. We do take them to the dog park and when they are there we try and let them off but the moment they fail to listen, it's back on the leash. Darby decided it would be way cool to see how far across the lake he could walk the first day we went there after it iced over. we are 99% sure the ices was less than an inch thick. I think Dawn had three heart attacks while we begged him to come back.. I THINK they haven't been off leash since then..

Just a side note here: If you missed the thread under health issues, Darby cut himself pretty badly last night.. so in the last two months he's been the major cause for alcohol consumption at the Bell household already..
 
Stairs -- Phebe came home at 12 weeks and within 2 days she was running both up and down the stairs. I didn't really give her much of a choice. I think I may have carried her up and down 2 or 3 times at most.

Front Door -- Phebe is 10 months now, and doesn't yet pay much attention to the front door or doorbell. If someone new comes into the house, she will probably do the perimeter patrol and bark, but not always.

Off-Leash -- Other than running agility, only for brief periods of fetch after we get to the park and occasionally in the front yard. We live in the suburbs and I can't risk her darting into the street. I will say that she seems to want to keep me in sight. If she happens to run past her comfort area, like this morning when she decided to chase a couple of ducks, she comes tearing back before I can even start after her.

Nike was adopted at about 6 months, so...

1. Stairs - he immediately charged up and down the stairs after Honor, so they have never been a problem.

2. Nike didn't bark until he lived with us a few weeks. Honor taught him, and Honor is my BIG talker (tons of barking and woo-ing!). He started barking at the door at about 7-8 months, but he barks as a warning, not excitement. He's still nervous when strangers come to the house.

3. I can say that I've never had Nike off-leash in an unfenced area before, and I'm not sure exactly why. I think it's because my other three dogs are Alaskan Klee Kai, and that is a breed you do NOT let off-leash regardless of training. It's ingrained I think, but Nike has never given me a moment's pause to wonder whether or not he would run away. In fact, the dog park is unfortunately wasted on him, as he just follows me around the whole time. :smile2:
 
- A couple of days after we got Romeo home (at 3mths) he was taking to the stairs on his own. I thought it would take longer so didn't bother to put a baby gate so he can't run up unsupervised. Then one day, when I was watching TV I realised how quiet it was. I looked for Romeo and tried to listen for his bell. Then I heard a tinkle. From upstairs. I looked up (our second floor is a split level thing so it's like a "balcony") and there he was, head sticking out between the bars looking down at me as if saying "Lookit me mummy! Look what I did! I climbed the stairs!" Needless to say, baby gate went up the next day. I couldn't take my heart leaping out of my throat again!

- Romeo barked at strangers at the door within the week. It actually took him a couple of days to "find his voice". I thought he was a quiet pup. Oh how mistakened I was!

- A leash is mandatory in my country so it's always on (for safety and religious purposes coz we have many Muslims here and they can't touch dogs). Plus there is just too much traffic to let him off leash. It's too dangerous and not a risk I'm willing to take. I know he won't run far but I've not proofed him with all distractions and who knows what might set him off! Even if I could I wouldn't let him off leash as a puppy. And definitely not as an adolescent. Only when he's well into adulthood and has shown that he's reliable; when he's more "stable". He does get to go to dog parks where he runs free, and in some of the larger parks, I do often put him on a long leash (which drags behind him).

To answer my own questions about Abby and she is almost 7 months - the stairs she is just started on because we thought she had a hip problem and she is very clumsy going up.
She does not bark yet or even show interest to go to the door.
She still needs a leash for when she sees other dogs she will run after them.

A: we live on the 2nd floor of the condo building... took us 2 days to train her up and down

A: don't remember about barking, sorry.

A: in our condo community we are not allowed to take her off the leash.. in our nearby park we almost don't take her off the leash because she can hear the "monster" garbage or any other huge truck on the road and she can run away.

 
ive had koda since he was 5 months old and tackled the steps easily but i just have the front porch steps. my parents have painted concrete steps going down to there basement that leads the backyard and he has not even attempted to go up them (theres no way i would let him go down them being inexperienced) no matter how much i call him or give him a nudge. daisy im not sure how long it took her to get it down pat. its funny about the barking thing, koda will bark non stop inside the house but will not bark when someones at the door or when hes outside and for daisy its the opposite shes quiet and will lounge around the house but if someone comes to the door she goes nuts and when shes outside she barks like crazy.

MMM can go up and down stairs, but there are certainly mistakes and fumbles along the way. Of course our stairs are wicked in this house. McKinley says the cellar steps are possessed, and refuses to this day to even attempt them.

But it is something we don't want to start and are actively working now to make sure he doesn't startHow long before a leash was no longer needed???He is off leash now at the in laws and has free run with Teddy the Terror, but I keep a close eye on the two of them when they are outside. Here in town, he will never be off leash, but he walks nicely now with no pulling and tugging, which is very nice to see because he has The Rabbit "Run"(which is a certain way of floating while he is walking!)

Just be patient with your sheltie. She will be fine!
 
My husband taught him how to climb up the steps when Dylan was 8 weeks old. Coming down took a week more.
I can't remember when he started barking at the front door. I think as soon as he knew the difference between the house and outside. So maybe when he ws 5 month old?
We will let his leash go occasionally when we take a walk in the morning if the cost is clear. When we do that, he turns around and look at us like "what are you doing? Pick that up. I don't trust you." We don't usually do that since he will take off if he sees bunnies, squirrels, deer, other dogs, birds, ......
