How long is Hydrogen Peroxide good for?

I got a bunch of squirts in him. I think the bottle was to old. Might need to keep an unopened one around and replace it every 6 months.

Of course I still swear Sca the Iron Belly thought is was some kind of water hot sauce and just wanted more (boy could eat anything)

Glad to hear Ian is doing okay. Sounds like you did the right thing when not all of your pill showed backup.
You probably are in for a fun time after he is released from doggy confinement and returns home. I envision major zoomies in your future. Good luck when you get him home

Geez what a fright Sheep! Years ago my hubby called me up…”honey, I think Daisy (my Cocker at the time) got at some pills” I’m like OMG so I raced home. She’d chewed an empty pill bottle but he hadn’t known that. I can imagine how stressful this must’ve been for you!
Glad you were able to get him into an emergency vet quickly, probably better than using the peroxide. Personally for my dogs peroxide takes FOREVER to work!
Once, Finnie got into the garbage and ate a bunch of apple cores and seeds. I thought oh no, the seeds have arsenic so I gave him the peroxide x 3 doses…still had to get him to jump around for 15 minutes to get him to vomit. Then did it 2 more times to make sure I got it all. Turns out they’d have to eat sooooo many seeds and they’d have to be crushed for the arsenic to be absorbed. I like the salt idea better, I’ve heard of others using it.

Sorry the HP did not work! Glad you reacted quickly and Ian seems to be doing well. It's not necessarily just the HP, it may be Ian is not as affected by a smaller sized dose and may need more. HP is NOT well liked and I have found if I do not get directly down the back of the throat, they won't swallow and let it dribble out of their mouths. Deacon will let him go out the back corners where it soaks into his fur. So without knowing I REALLY go it down his throat, I can't confirm his doseage.

We are well versed in HP here having Deacon who has a sock (and fingers off of gloves and flip-flops and ... the list goes on) eating fetish.

I always keep 2 bottles - one opened and one unopened and sealed, just in case. I also have instructions taped to the cabinet (dark location) where the opened HP is stored with instructions on where to find the sealed bottle. I also keep a syringe rubber-banded to the HP bottle. We have this down to a science here in our household.

For Deacon who is just shy of 20 lbs and should be probably 19 lbs, he gets 10ml in a syringe; dose is supposed to be up to 1 ml per pound and they are supposed to be able to get 2 doses - emergency vet if they don't vomit in 15 - 20 minutes. I do in the bathroom and wait with him so I can ensure he vomits and I can see exactly what comes up. I straddle the back of Deacon holding his rough quite tightly so his head is back, tilted upward and his mouth is open. The syringe goes to the back of the throat, I tighten my grip and slowly expel - if I squirt it out quicker, not all makes it down. Deacon has an iron stomach so has always taken 2 of those smaller doses although I do give him a few minutes to see if it works on him. I swear Brodie almost vomits on his own if I show him the bottle... your mileage may vary.
Thanks for that description Sandy! Maybe that’s what’s happening with Finnie…i just assumed he had a cast iron stomach. Could be he’s not getting it all. Either that or he’s just not affected by it.
I’ll try your method next time, hopefully there is no next time but then he’s a Sheltie who also likes to swallow things so the other dogs don’t get them!

H202 is pretty cheap so maybe keeping an unopened bottle around for safety sake will be a good idea-- if the bottle has been opened then the 02 will bubble off to the point it equalizes the 02 content of the air above the liquid- i.e. the more you use the more it will deteriorate as hydrogen peroxide-- i used to use the stuff at work- 25% stuff that would oxidize your skin in a flash it got on you, we keep it in the refrigerator but never longer than a month or so after it had been opened. If little has been used the the lid is kept tight is could last a while...but it is so infrequently used a new bottle after use would not be a bad idea..the store bought peroxide is 3% so it can deteriorate pretty fast once opened..

Thanks for that tip! I’ll pick one up tomorrow!
