How much is your agility costing you?

Pretty lucky in my area that we have an agility trial in some venue(CPE/NADAC/UDSAA/AKC/UKC) almost every weekend of the year here within driving distance. Sometimes there are even a choice. So trials usually only cost entry fees and gas. Problem is it can be hard to get into the winter trials because they are only 1 ring indoors. When Summer comes and the indoor soccer fields open up if is easier to get in.

I only enter 1-2 trials a month if that for 2 or 3 days. So between $70-105 per dog (STD and JWW) plus gas to get there.

My classes are $80 for 7 weeks after you are in the comp classes. The beginer class was like $125 for 5 weeks and then $100/5 weeks. I can run 2 dogs sometimes in the comp class for a nominal second fee. The classes are where I end up spending my money- it will be better when Birch is able to go to the big dog classes. :)

It cost me too much that I had to quit and stay quit.

Classes are $20/wk so about $900+ a year.

AKC for the typical STD and JWW is $37 a day.
Add in another $15-17 for FAST or T2B, then multiply that by the days.
So at least $85 for me for the weekend.

I'm not even going to try and calculate gas. A 2-day trial is about 240 miles, so close to a tankful. Dangit, so about $45.

Add in food/snacks/water for the day and the dogs.

Forget when I was doing ASCA to "train in the ring". More classes to run over a weekend (albeit cheaper), and about double the distance to go to.

One year, I calculated it and I think I had spent about $5k btwn classes, trials, hotels, food, seminars, equipment, etc. ouch.

And this is why I haven't been on the boards (too depressing) and why I haven't done any training since Nov, any trialing since Oct, and why I probably won't be doing any agility this year. :dead:

I have pretty much quit doing any agility, even at home. Sigh. I miss it and you guys, but it's just too hard to read everything here. Thought I'd give it a whirl today.

I'm really glad this thread was created because I really do want to try agility with Missy at some point. I was wondering about the costs, and I figured it was expensive, but I didn't know if it would be rude to ask... I was raised to believe the discussion about finances was.. rude? IDK, but I don't see the harm.

Right now we're learning flyball, but it seems like it's going to be a relatively inexpensive sport to do.

-They're training me for free
-So far it seems like all the tournaments in region 5 are either in New Caney (50 miles round trip, 150 if I went there 3 days in a row) or Huntsville (100 miles round trip, 300 miles if I went 3 days in a row, also my sister lives there so I could stay with her), so that's not too bad. I have a Corolla so I get pretty good gas milage.
-The team takes turn bringing food so I don't have to worry about eating out mutliple times during Tournament Weekends. The one tournament I went to I was shocked when I got there and they had brought all sorts of breakfast foods, and chili for lunch. One could gain quite a bit of weight just snacking all day at a flyball tournament!

If I want to do agilty, I better start saving up for it! I don't plan on worrying about it until Missy figures out flyball.. I don't want to confuse her!

Oh yea District 14 takes lunch serious  In the summer we even have popsicles since I have the motorhome. Normal is some juice, danish, cookies, lunch like spaghetti or bbq, chips and cake.

If you're lucky enough to be within reasonable distance of a club or organization hosting trials there are often opportunities to "work" the trial for vouchers good for trial entries.
I'm pretty sure there are some people who end up not paying anything for there trial entries all year round.

Not AKC, not around here. Working gets you a guaranteed entry no draw and each club gets 32 spots. There are always more people willing to work than spots. Entries are the same price.

Wow! Trials actually completely fill up somewhere?
Never seen that happen : never had a draw for entries -- wherever I've trialled a guaranteed entry is pretty much a given for everyone - even entering on the day of closing. Workers are always in short supply - hence the inducements.

Same here in New England trials always fills and long wait lists. There are trials every weekend here AKC, USDAA are the big trials and then CPE an ASCA.

It's gotten to be the same way around here. ALL of the ones in Indianapolis require a draw now, and a large number of the ones in Ohio and Tennessee do as well. TN ALWAYS has a large wait list.

I haven't seen a show around here that hasn't filled in quite a while. Agility is really catching on! :biggrin2:
