How often to bathe?

Hi all, I've had a sheltie for about one month and he's 5 months old. I bathed him once right when I got him, using a special dog/puppy shampoo. I haven't since and heard bathing too often is unnecessary or even harmful. Is never bathing him okay as long as he isn't dirty and doesn't smell?

Unless there is a need, you don't have to bath except every other month or longer. Mine only get bathed about three or four times a year. Their feet and bellies get washed off if they are muddy. Hope this helps. I know it can be difficult trying to search the threads for an answer that may already be there.

Dickens gets about three to four baths per year, and it's amazing how clean he manages to stay, even after rolling about in the grass and running through mud. Which is fine with him, because he hates getting baths. All I have to do is mutter the word, and he's off like a shot, with his head down and his ears plastered to his head.

So far I've given Enzo a bath once a month (he's 8 months now). After about a month he starts to get a stronger 'dog smell,' even if I brush him with a spray conditioner. He gets his feet washed more often, though. I kind of have an obsession with clean/manicured paws... Lol

Our Mally hates baths.

We find that if we brush him often, he does not need to be bathed as much.

Don and I work together with the brushing of Mally, as treats are involved, off and on throughout the brushing. This makes it worth Mally's while!

Mine get probably half a dozen full washes a year, in spring though they a bath every couple of weeks (or even weekly) to get all the undercoat out. But I give them sponge baths more often, esp as Tully likes rolling in things. A sponge bath involves rinsing them down with a car sponge in a bucket with some conditioner. Really helps get rid of the doggy smell.
