How to make a major

This should be an easy question, but I can't remember the answer.

How do you make a major?

I just read online that the Charleston Kennel Club's show is going to be a major for shelties. Does that mean there will be a lot of shelties there? Or just good ones?

It depends on the region you are in but there is a minimum number of dogs or bitches that must be entered at that show and they must all show up and show and not get DQ. In MN, a 3pts major is 12 dogs and for bitches it is 17. So it is harder to get the numbers for a bitch.

However, if there is a major in dogs and a bitch takes best of winners, she will get a major too. People refer to it as a cross over. There is also a chance of getting a major if a dog or bitch wins best in breed or best of opposite and there are enough special(CH) of the same sex(if BOS) or of both sexes(if BOB)entered to make up the difference. You can also place in groups and get a major if you beat a breed that had a major.

But, if I'm reading that, you can get a 1 pt major with just 2 dogs (or bitches)...why do they always say that majors are hard to get if you don't need that many dogs?
 
A major is anything over 3 pts. So 3 pts ,4 pts or 5 pts. You need two majors of atleast 3pts to finish and a total of 15 pts.

1 and 2 pts would go towards the other 9pts. If you get 9pts and still need the majors, the dog is said to be minored out. As a courtesy if that dogs is entered in anything that doesn't make a major, you pull them so dogs who still need the 1 and 2 pts can get them.

It is hard to get those majors. Diva has 3 pts. Won as 3 single 1pts wins. The bad thing was she beat 8, 9, and 9 bitches to get them. She also had a reserve to 16 which would have been a major but it broke when 1 girl didn't show up. You need 10 bithces for 2pts in MN and atleast 17 bitches for the majors. The only majors we have had in bitches all year have been at the speciallites and one with a cross over from the boys.
