How to tire a sheltie indoors?

Frisbee doesn't fly well in rain. As to 'little' we got 4 inches this morning so it was snorkel time. Last night was supposed to be flyball night but they closed I565 so I had no way of getting there even close to on time so instead of chasing the BC's he terrorized me.

I notice the treat thing and he does have a Kong ball but I was trying to get his weight down and 4-5 cookies a night is something I need him to avoid so he stays trimmer than me :o

I think in many things he and Lexi are similar. I get the impression she is the energizer bunny that instigates trouble and chases but is not an alpha dog at all (same as him)
 
I agree that playing fetch in the house doesn't do much to tire a sheltie out... However, I have found that if the game of fetch involves the ball going down a flight of stairs, my sheltie will eventually get tired out. All that running up and down stairs is a great way for them to burn energy!
 
Just as Silaria said, you can wear them out mentally just as much as physically. Think of it as if you had a long day at the office, even though all you did was sit and work, you are still exhausted. Or if you take a long drive. You still sleep well at night because you were mentally working on driving.

On rainy days we do LOTS of mental work. My favorite was teaching the command touch. Then using touch you can teach your dog to do stuff such as close cabinets.

We use shaping techniques over here and we can basically shape any behaviour. It is so much fun. Even more fun to do on a friend :lol:
 
I asked Tara this one. She says get another sheltie!!:winkgrin: Chasing each other around the dining room table (race track) tires us out, up and down stairs trying to get that squeaky toy - that's a game that can last for hours....................

Very true! As I am sitting here all I hear is the noises made by my girls as they are in a wrestling match together. They keep each other busy!
 
When the weather is bad here, Megan goes on the treadmill too! Right now it's not so bad, but during the summer months when it's 99999 degrees outside, treadmill here we come :wink2:

We play alot of "search and rescue" games at home when it rains. Except instead of searching for and rescuing a person, they search and rescue FOOD! :lol:

I put them in a stay in another then go out of sight into the next room (or the rest of the house!) and plant treats all around the room, in corners, under rugs, on an ornament, any surface from ground to their nose level. Then I go back to them, let them sniff the treat I planted and release them with a Go Find! And they'll search the room with their little noses and rescue all the treats.

They enjoy this thoroughly and it's very tiring for them to use their nose.

I tried this game...but Lexi and Bimmer (the cat) get all the treats. Poor Bentley :no: Haha!
