How to train this behavior?

Hi! Just checking to see if anyone have any instructions or link to video on how to do this.

The handler would recall the dog, then all of a sudden give a (down) command and the dog would stop coming and drop down, then they would recall again and the dog would continue to come.

Is there just a really good enforced down command, or is that something that is trained separately?

Thanks.

it calls drop on recall DOR
here is one of my favorite obedience teachers

and here is kikopup

I have taught it differently, DOR can be taught in a few minutes if you have strong verbal down. Can´t find any references so unless someone posts it I have to videotape mine.

Thanks SheltieChe, I didn't know the name of that, now I do, and i went thru all the links you provided, I think the kikopup one will most likely work for me, guess thats what Sammy and I will be doing for the next little while ;)

Good luck with this. :smile2:Many people I know swear it should be one or the core behaviour skills as it can be a lifesaver. It is a part of our Gold Good Citizen Test for the dog to stop on command when moving at speed. When I did the test with Revel many years ago I didn't actually train it as I was concerned it would slow up his (never very fast) recalls. I just shouted "wait" at him when he was being tested and hoped that it would surprise him sufficiently that he would stop without thinking too much about it! Fortunatly it worked!! Yogi was different as I'd spent a lot of time training a solid recall as he had a bad habit of chasing. I didn't want him to learn to stop on the way back either as I preferred him to always know he had to return. So I trained him to stop when chasing after something. Never very sucessfully I might add but sufficient to pass the test when going after a tennis ball.

I've put quite a bit of effort into the down with Epic as I think it really would be beneficial for him and have made progress towards a reliable instant down - trouble is he finds it so exciting he keeps shrieking. This limits the amount of practice I can do but he is getting a reasonably accurate drop at a distance on a marker (mat, target, hoop etc) so will gradually start fading the marker out next. The key seems to be perfecting an instant down next to you first, slowly building in distance next and finally adding motion.

Some of my attempts today. Looks like I need to do better with the down command before I continue.

What is cutie pup! Kudos for using clicker! I think he will get it in no time if you make it easier for him. Splitting behaviors and teaching them separately helps a lot in my experience so you can teach down separately and come separately.
Not necessary, but I do teach a release word, i.e. what down means? 1 sec 2 sec?
For me down means down stay till next cue. It works much better in long run. Also again not needed but I have a feeling you might go far with Sammy so doing it ¨right¨first time might be time well spend. What is the criteria of your down? On the side? Straight down? Move feet? Which feet?
I always think of clicker as laser point, clicking for exact action I ask.
It is superb that you videotaping your training!!! :biggrin2:

Thanks! Sammy and I have been (clicker) training and video taping since she was 8 weeks old. I am very glad to have a video record of her growing up. I am not very experienced at dog training, I got most of my instructions from Youtube videos and SN members suggestions. I have seen videos of people's dog that pretty bounce into each of the sit/stand/down position without even moving their feet, which is very impressive, but I don't think I can manage to teach that. All I wanted is for Sammy to become my jogging companion who can behave calmly, and I think I am slowing getting there. All the "training" I do is really just bonding exercise so she gets used to listening to me.

Same here, all our training is for fun. We live by principle play is work and work is play:biggrin2:
Here is the clip- first 46 sec- on how I teach down at distance which is super easy to teach if you have solid verbal down. Notice how I throw food over my shoulder. The moment I see dog hesitating and waiting for my raised hand to throw food is good cue to try that verbal.
Rest of the clip is teaching recognition of verbal cue down in conjunction with agility training which we never done before. Since it is our first try I am very lighthearted about criteria and will accept and reward even dog stopping as recognition of the cue. I will expect better performance and stricter criteria for future training but for today I am very happy. I should not be laughing but Leo was super cute in that tunnel:smile2:, my unbiased opinion, ¨huh? did not you want me to go to the tunnel?¨:confused2:
