How well can a dog in the dark?

Thank you everyone who commented about eye sight too. I know that is probably a factor. However, Vogue bit the dust the other day so now I'm starting to wonder if it's the frosty (or wet) grass that they're slipping on, cuz that girl is very agile. I may have to train them to use the stairs and then I think I'll put something down on the stairs for traction. I think they also hate the stairs because they're open (as in, they can see through the back side of them).

Thank you for the replies. I just want to make it easier for them. I'm now thinking, when we rebuild the deck, to put railings on it.

In Jasmine's later years she was going blind and we had to get a ramp for her since she could no longer navigate stairs. We were also worried she might hurt herself!
We got her a ramp and put small mini lights on it to help her find it in the dark. It really helped! They were solar powered! Fyi, works great at night... not so well early in the morning! Apparently, the charge is not strong enough to store for use throughout the night if you leave it on. They do make battery unit too.

I agree to install lights on each stair would be the best solution. Maybe get his eyes checked by a vet too?

I wish I could do solar powered. I just purchased some items to mark the corners and well, I live in Oregon, it's too cloudy, haha! They're barely lit. boo! Hmmm....will need to think about what i can use that isn't solar powered, but can withstand rain, snow, ice. LOL. Actually, if it's icy, I may take the dogs out front. The deck gets super slippery.

I honestly think that shelties hearing is better than other dogs (if they haven't blown their eardrums from barking so much, lol) and their eyes are a little worse. Sometimes I feel like they have trouble seeing shadows and other things in the dark, where my Irish Setters have no trouble. But then, my shelties can hear family members cars coming from 1/4 mile away!

I almost spit out my water when I read, "if they haven't blown their eardrums from barking so much", omg, that was hilarious!

I also wanted to say....I don't think it helps that the deck is a dark brown. Ugh. I wonder, maybe I can paint the sides in a light color or something.
