Hwyht - 8/11/11

Here is my poor attempt at recreating this set up. Please note that I do not have enough jumps (hence using the tire, and jumps with no bars because the jump cups are broken!).

I love that you set it up!! That is so awesome!!!

Hey, didn't you tell me there were 7 weaves? You're missing one. :P Also, um, you took the tunnel on the wrong side. :P You're supposed to cross over to the right end of the tunnel.

I can say this....the jump after the weaves, was sooo close to the weaves.
I'll post my ugly run and explain where everyone was having issues.

Haha oops! I will try again this afternoon when it cools down and take the right end of the tunnel. This is what happens when you set things up from memory! :rolleyes2:

The results

For the 5-6-7, you had two choices
1. FC 5, pull the dog after 6 to go to 7 or
2. RC 6, and cut across to 7.

Many of them weren't able to make the FC. It was either fast, or the dog would take the turn too wide, etc. Lots of issues. And this is an Excellent course and by "a lot" I mean across all heights.

As for option 2. If you guessed the dogs would go straight into the wrong side of the tunnel, you're right. RC'ing 6 wasn't working across the board. Most dogs were too far ahead and the tunnel was too close, so they didn't have time to read their owners movement.

The dogs who did complete the 5-6-7 series got a FC in and pulled the dog from 6 to 7.

As for 2-3-4 series.
Oh, there were a LOT of ways to do this. FC between 3-4, FC between 2-3. RC the weaves, etc, etc, etc. Let's just say people got this series more often that the other one.

Video of the course:
@ 11 seconds starts the series
Disclaimer. The handler running doesn't run this dog typically. You can see she FC'd the weaves and that was great. She also RC'd the jump prior to the tunnel and the dog was about to go for the wrong end. That's about what all the dogs did when RC'd.

I think with this series, ALL of us were surprised at what the dogs were doing. We all thought they'd go here or there, and they'd soooo not do it. And when over half of the runs go wrong, you start to realize that there is only one "good" way to handle that sequence and that, to me, is strange. I always figure people handle how they want and do what is best for their dog. The 5-6-7 sequence showed me that wasn't true.

I was going to post my own run, but it's scary. lol.

Lead out to just before two with the dog set at an angle at the start line to slice the jump and set a nice line. As the dog comes over 1, give a strong jump verbal, move across the jumps and get a front cross. Pull exiting the weaves (no independent weaves here, otherwise I would handle this differently). HARD take off side rear cross with me staying behind the jump line (I have very nice tunnel sucks, so no need to get closer- Aurora got sent from 2 jumps back with me cutting across the ring last weekend. That's how confident I am my dogs will go get a tunnel) with a name check. The dog would be getting a lot of decel, and a lot of hard movement cutting in behind the dog to let them know it isn't what they think. Once the dog checks in, redirect and send to the tunnel. Staying at jump 8 long enough for the dog to see me, I give the dog indirect eye contact and take off down the line with dog on right (with me leaving before they ever get close- I want them chasing down the line).
The other option, if you have a dog with independent weave poles would be to start drifting away from the weaves so when the dog is finished with the weaves, you are on the landing side of five, and as your dog exits the poles, you are giving the jump command and indirect eye contact, and heading down the line, and then cuing with a forward motion front cross the tunnel. That, IMO, is the only way with a fairly quick dog to get down the line fast enough to make use of the front cross. Even with a slower dog, it would still be my choice if the dog had independent weave poles, as I don't care much for forced front crosses where you pretty much have to stop the dog and often wrap them around you to get them.

Alright, I *think* I did this correctly this time. But, there's no telling.

This was my first attempt at handling it this way, and it's sort of ugly and exaggerated (Why do my arms look like I am dancing? Who knows.) But, it worked.

I also had to exaggerate the weave entry since Lexi's not so good at that right now.
